These Are the Guns of ‘Planet of the Apes’

At the end of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Caesar led his community into the depths of the Muir Woods, while a deadly disease ravaged the greater global population. What happened next?

That’s the question that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes answers when it arrives in theaters this summer. But thanks to a new feature in Empire, we already have some answers: Caesar’s apes have their hands on automatic weapons, and that’s bad news for mankind.

“This is now a community of about 2,000 apes,” star Andy Serkis says of the film’s story. “For the first eight years [after the humanity-devastating virus], the apes were looking down from Muir Woods to San Francisco and could see lights and fires, but now it’s gone very quiet. Until this day in our film when this small band of humans comes up. That’s suddenly a huge, dividing moment in the lives of these apes. There are some particularly strong reactions to the humans and that’s the course of the story.”

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on July 11, starring Jason Clarke and Gary Oldman.
