Like audiences, the forces behind The Purge can't get enough of the horror franchise. To that end, Deadline reports Universal Pictures, Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse Productions have begun development on a third film.
James DeMonaco, who wrote and directed the first two installments, will return to write and possibly direct this one.
“I never imagined that The Purge would become the phenomenon it has become," DeMonaco said in a statement, "and I am thrilled to continue my collaboration with Blumhouse, Sebastien Lemercier, Platinum Dunes and the great team at Universal in building The Purge into a worldwide franchise."
Released in 2013, The Purge grossed $89 million worldwide off of a $3 million budget. This year's sequel, The Purge: Anarchy, was made for $9 million and has gone on to earn nearly $109 million worldwide.
The series takes place in a world where every year all laws are suspended as a way to get some truly terrible urges out of the populace's system. The first film focused on one house trying to defend itself from a band of masked killers while the second got out into the world, following a variety of people whose paths eventually cross.
