Even as Disney plans its own return to "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," Chernin Entertainment is developing a live-action retelling of Victor Hugo’s classic novel.

The Tracking Board reports that, like Disney's intended television project, Chernin's feature is titled "Esmeralda," after the story's heroine.

The news comes as Disney follows its success with "Maleficent" and "Cinderella" with a slate of live-action retellings of such animated classics as "The Jungle Book," "Beauty and the Beast," "Dumbo" and "101 Dalmatians." Universal Pictures, too, is getting in on the action with "The Little Mermaid," while Warner Bros. has its own version of "The Jungle Book" in the works.
