The Dropout's Amanda Seyfried and West World's Evan Rachel Wood are reportedly attached to a new Thelma & Louise project. However, this time around, there will be no need to turn up the radio in the duo's iconic '66 Ford Thunderbird as the project is said to be a musical.
According to Variety, Seyfried and Wood are currently workshopping a musical adaptation of MGM's classic 1991 film. Seyfried recently won a Golden Globe for her performance in Hulu's The Dropout but was unable to accept the award in person because she was "deep in the process of creating a new musical," according to presenters and Yellowstone stars Mo Brings Plenty and Cole Hauser. Variety's sources suggest the project is a re-imagining of Thelma & Louise.
Directed by Ridley Scott from an original script by Callie Khouri, Thelma & Louise featured Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon in the title roles as two women on the run after killing a man in self-defense. The film was critically acclaimed, earning five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director (for Scott). Khouri took home the film's lone trophy for her screenplay.
A Thelma & Louise Musical Has Been in Development
Variety notes that a musical adaptation of the beloved film has been in the works since 2021, with Khouri attached alongside singer/songwriter Neko Case, who is crafting the score, while Dear Edward's Haley Feiffer pens the book. Six Degrees of Separation's Trip Cullman is reportedly on board to direct. It is currently unknown which of the parts will be played by Seyfried and Wood, respectively.
"I am in New York," Seyfried said in an Instagram video posted on Jan. 11. The actress did not cite her involvement in a Thelma & Louise musical specifically but confirmed she "had to miss [the Golden Globes] because I am doing something that is magic and it's musical. So I'm finally getting to do something that I've never really done. That's all I can really say about it. Hopefully more soon."
Seyfried has previously appeared in the musicals Mamma Mia! and its sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Wood also has experience in the genre, lending her voice to the Beatles-inspired Across the Universe and Frozen 2. She also played pop idol Madonna in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Though she did not sing in the Weird Al biopic, Wood displayed her uncanny impressions of Madonna, Alanis Morisette and Janis Joplin while promoting the film on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
"I would love to do another musical," Wood recently told Slash Film. "I would love to do musical theater in New York. That's where I started, was musical theater. And so that's really where I feel the most at home."
