The Wrong Side: Werewolf by Night vs. Hulk

In this feature, I examine comic book fights that were particularly notable in the wrong side winning (or at least that the fight wasn’t won the “right” way). This really isn’t a big deal, of course, as it doesn’t really matter if the “wrong” person won a fight. But it’s fun to talk about!

If you want to suggest a fight for future inclusion in this feature, drop me a line at bcronin@comicbookresources.com. Don’t suggest a fight in the comments!

This week, based on a suggestion from reader Keith, we take a look at the Werewolf by Night doing surprisingly well against the Hulk…

As always, the first page we look at their power levels and on the second page, we look at the fight itself.

Also, as always, we answer the age-old question – “How did they do when they fought Spider-Man?”

The Hulk we have covered here. Quick answer – Spidey has not fared well against the Hulk over the years.

Jack Russell, who turned into a werewolf by night, fought Spider-Man in Marvel Team-Up #12 by Gerry Conway, Len Wein, Ross Andru and Don Perlin…

So, as you can see, he didn’t do particularly well against Spidey. Later in the issue, Spidey runs up against him again, only with the Werewolf being controlled by a magician…

Note how Spidey shrugs the Werewolf off of him? That becomes important later.

So Werewolf by Night had his own series for really quite a long run. Over forty issues, which I find to be really impressive. Dude’s a werewolf. That’s about it.

Anyhow, his most famous rival during his series only showed up 32 issues in, which was Moon Knight…

Moon Knight kicking the Werewolf’s ass is a bit excusable, since he was all decked out in silver, which is pretty much a werewolf’s kryptonite.

But check out when he fought this psycho big game hunter in Werewolf by Night #4 (by Gerry Conways, Mike Ploog and Frank Bolle)…

Notice how this just normal dude shrugged the Werewolf off of him? Important!

The Werewolf had some nicer fights, though, check out how he embarrasses Iron Man in Werewolf by Night #42 (by Doug Moench and Don Perlin) when they both try to stop a bad guy at the same time, colliding with each other (this was at the very tail end of the series when Jack gained the ability to keep his own mind while in werewolf form)…

The Werewolf does well there, but clearly he was about to lose that fight, right?

Anyhow, he actually even fought the weaker “Joe Fixit” Hulk in Incredible Hulk #362 (by Peter David, Jeff Purves and Marie Severin) and it did not go so well for the Werewolf…

So how about when they fought each other during the Hulk’s strong, “Savage Hulk” incarnation?
