In this feature, I examine comic book fights that were particularly notable in the wrong side winning (or at least that the fight wasn't won the "right" way). This really isn't a big deal, of course, as it doesn't really matter if the "wrong" person won a fight. But it's fun to talk about!

This week, based on a suggestion from reader David A., we take a look at whether using "the whole deck" would really make a difference against the Imperial Guard member, Gladiator...

As always, the first page we look at their power levels and on the second page, we look at the fight itself.

Also, as always, we answer the age-old question - "How did they do when they fought Spider-Man?"

Gladiator somehow has only fought Spider-Man once in a giveaway comic. It was just a brief encounter and I don't have a copy to show y'all (if anyone has a copy and would like to scan said fight, that'd be swell) but Gladiator missed punching Spider-Man his first try and his second try grabbed him and chucked him off of a building. Gladiator is pretty tough.

Spider-Man and Gambit, on the other hand, have also surprisingly only fought once in Web of Spider-Man #113 (by Terry Kavanagh, Alex Saviuk and Stephen Baskerville - it is crazy seeing Saviuk trying to draw in a "90s" style here). Gambit actually handles himself pretty well...

Gambit's power is to charge objects with kinetic energy. Let us just stipulate that Gambit's powers can really blow a ton of shit up. I'm not here to knock his powers. They're pretty badass. Yes, he couldn't even knock Captain America out even after charging Cap's own shirt, but we'll assumed he was trying for a low charge there. So yes, he is powerful.

HOWEVER, check this stuff out.

From Marvel Comics Presents #49 (by Len Kaminski, Don Heck and Vince Mielcarek), Gladiator straight out FLIES THOUGH A STAR UNHARMED!!!

In Fantastic Four #249 (by John Byrne), the Gladiator survives an almost nova explosion...

So clearly, Gladiator can takes some major damage. But can he take a full deck? Find out!

Gladiator and Gambit first encountered each other in Uncanny X-Men #276 (by Chris Claremont, Jim Lee and Scott Williams). Man, first off, this story was like balls to the wall "make Gambit look as cool as humanly possible." He comes off very well in this storyline. Secondly, early Jim Lee, man, that dude was so dynamic. He's still a fine artist today, but his work has definitely stiffened a bit over the years.

So anyhow, Gambit and Jubilee escape in the wake of the explosion.

The next issue, he fights Gambit again and things go differently...

Now, is it a cool scene and really well drawn by Jim Lee? Yes, no doubt. But Jose Luis-Garcia Lopez did an even BETTER job with Batman vs. Hulk and that didn't make that scene work either.

So yeah, I don't think Gambit's "whole deck" explodes with the same power as a freaking STAR. So this doesn't work, which isn't a big deal, since it really was a cool scene.

Okay, that's it for this week! Thanks for the suggestion, David!
