In this feature, I examine comic book fights that were particularly notable in the wrong side winning (or at least that the fight wasn't won the "right" way). This really isn't a big deal, of course, as it doesn't really matter if the "wrong" person won a fight. But it's fun to talk about!

If you want to suggest a fight for future inclusion in this feature, drop me a line at bcronin@comicbookresources.com. Don't suggest a fight in the comments!

Today, I'm going to try something a little bit different. A few months back I got a bunch of different e-mails suggesting a certain Daredevil/Wolverine fight from the Enemy of the State Wolverine storyline. I suspected that it was being argued somewhere, and I looked around and saw that this fight has been a major bone of contention on a few different web forums, with different factions supporting each side. Anyhow, reader John C. then suggested it this week and I figured, as a change of pace, let me try one week where I post a fight that I honestly am not sure where I side myself and see what you folks think - in this case, the great Wolverine/Deadpool dumbbell debate...

Even in this approach, we still follow the basic format of the first page spotlights their power levels and the second page examines the fight itself.

And still, as always, the first question we need to ask is...

How did these people do when they fought Spider-Man?

Both guys have had very respectable showings against Spidey.

In Amazing Spider-Man #287 (by Christopher Priest, Erik Larsen and Art Nichols), they tussle and while Spider-Man is clearly the winner of the fight, DD holds his own...

(They also fought during The Death of Jean DeWolff, but let's not talk about that now - that could be the basis of its own column)

In Spider-Man Vs. Wolverine #1, ALSO by Christopher Priest (with art by M.D. Bright and Al Williamson), Wolverine takes a beating from Spider-Man but holds on very well over all, even though Spidey is clearly out of his league, power-wise...

Okay, so now let us look at the fight at hand between Daredevil and Wolverine in Wolverine #24 (by Mark Millar, John Romita Jr. and Klaus Janson), part five of "Enemy of the State"...

The set-up is that Wolverine has been killed and been resurrected by the Hand as a killing machine. Specifically he's been killing superpowered folks ("capes"). In this issue, he and a group of Hand ninjas attack Daredevil's home in a successful attempt to draw out Elektra to protect Daredevil (at which point a different Hand group, led by the powerful Gorgon, takes HER out so that they can kill HER and resurrect her as Wolverine's evil partner in murder).

So Wolverine is brainwashed at the time, but as we've seen in the issues leading up to this one, Wolverine is fully evil and has been doing very well for himself so far. And although the attack on Daredevil was specifically intended to draw Elektra in, we see Wolverine's thoughts, he still intends on killing Daredevil. So he's not holding back. Okay, so the fight...

(Being critically wounded by the sword jolts Wolverine out of the Hand's control for a brief period of time for...reasons, and he manages to tell Daredevil of their main plan, which is to kill the President of the United States. He also tells him how he attacked Daredevil to get to Elektra)

Okay, so as you might notice by now, the fight sort of turns on the dumbbell scene. Would a dumbbell to the face by a non-superpowered combatant mess Wolverine up that much? I really don't know. The argument FOR it working is that Daredevil is pretty much a ninja and he can know where exactly to put it, etc. The argument AGAINST it is that Wolverine took punches from SPIDER-MAN that didn't faze him as much as a dumbbell to the noggin.

So I'll leave this one to you, folks - did that fight "work" for you?

That's it for this week! Next time we'll go back to the standard format. Feel free to make suggestions for fights you think were "wrongly" decided to bcronin@comicbookresources.com
