In this feature, I examine comic book fights that were particularly notable in the wrong side winning (or at least that the fight wasn't won the "right" way). This really isn't a big deal, of course, as it doesn't really matter if the "wrong" person won a fight. But it's fun to talk about!

This week, based on a suggestion from reader Michael S., we're taking a look at the time that Batman did some maximum damage to Carnage through some, well, punches to the face...

As always, the first page we look at their power levels and on the second page, we look at the fight itself.

Also, as always, we answer the age-old question - "How did they do when they fought Spider-Man?"

Spider-Man has faced Carnage a number of times and honestly, Carnage has done very well against Spidey on a physical level. Here is their first fight...

Spidey had to get help from Venom to take out Carnage.

Later, during Maximum Carnage, Carnage added more allies to his fight and they sort of kicked Spidey's ass, leading Spidey to add more heroes to help him out (well, he eventually got to that point - at first he was all, "Well, they kicked my ass, but I have a responsibility to still try to stop them")...

Spidey and Batman have somehow never fought each other.

Okay, so let's do a quick power check on each of them. This is pretty simple, right? Carnage is like a slightly stronger version of Venom. Not much more you need to know there. He once split a fight against the Sentry...

Carnage ended up somehow SURVIVING that in a way, so that's pretty impressive, right?

Batman, meanwhile, do you really need me to talk to you about Batman? Batman is badass. Batman once kicked the Spectre in the face...

I've actually had people suggest that fight for this column, but, dudes, check out THE VERY NEXT PAGE...

Anyhow, on to the fight!

First off, let me note that I have no problem with Batman defeating Carnage in GENERAL. Batman is pretty smart and has a lot of money and awesome technology he can buy/build. Carnage, like Venom, can be defeated by sonics or immense heat (Firestar once almost killed Carnage). So Batman clearly COULD defeat Carnage. No doubt about it. It's the SPECIFICS of how he beat Carnage in this particular fight that I have a problem with.

Anyhow, it all went down in Spider-Man and Batman: Disordered Minds, by J.M. DeMatteis, Mark Bagley, Scott Hanna and Mark Farmer.

Batman encounters Carnage early on, and already he does a little too well for my tastes, as Carnage really should be a bit out of his league physically...

In the end, Carnage and Joker team-up, which is a really awesome team-up. Especially when Joker splits from him because Carnage doesn't like the idea of using a deadly virus on Gotham since Carnage wants to torture people one-on-one. Joker escapes using a bomb but returns when it looks like Carnage is about to kill Batman...

I think that that is a very well-crafted scene by DeMatteis and I think it works very well to have Carnage temporarily distracted, allowing Batman to escape. However, the TEMPORARILY part is where I have an issue, as there is no reason why Carnage's guard should REMAIN down while Batman is proceeding to beat the crap out of him. "How nice of you to expose your face so that I can more easily punch you"..

Carnage has such obvious weaknesses (fire/sonics) that I don't like that DeMatteis didn't have Batman use one of those instead of the unconvincing physical beatdown.

Okay, that's it for this week!
