The following contains spoilers for Netflix's The Wonder, and a discussion on sexual assault.

Lately, when Florence Pugh's affiliated with movies, it's safe to say she's tapped as the main hero who'll save the day and bring the plot home. It's been evident since her masterclass in the horror Midsommar, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe now shaping her as the new Black Widow. This, of course, has fans as eager as ever for her return as Yelena Belova in the Thunderbolts film.

But outside of Marvel Studios, Pugh's viewed as a badass in general, with Don't Worry Darling positioning her as someone intent on breaking a toxic patriarchy. Simply put, her stock's off the chart, which is why many are soaking in her moving performance as Lib in Netflix's The Wonder. However, while it seems like Lib, an English doctor trying to save a young girl from starving herself to death, is indeed the hero of the story, Lib's endgame is actually helped by a silent angel in the background.

The Wonder Has Lib Fleeing with Anna

Lib and Anna in Netflix's The Wonder

In the 1800s, Lib has to determine why Anna's able to survive four months without food. She's investigating along with Sister Michael, which leads to a battle between science and religion, as Michael and the Irish town think Anna's a teenage miracle and martyr in the making. Unfortunately, Anna's been sexually abused, with her family gaslighting her that this fast and eventual death will be a purifying sacrifice for them all.

It leads to Lib sedating her with a serum, burning the house down, kidnapping the teen and making her think she's reborn and atoned at a holy well. She has her journalist friend, Will, secret the girl away while Lib faces the courts. With no evidence of foul play and the parish looking to absolve themselves of any crime, they free Lib, who sneaks off to Australia with Will and Anna under new identities to end the film.

The Wonder's Surprise Hero Is Sister Michael

Netflix's The Wonder reveals Anna was groomed by her brother

However, when Michael and Lib convene after closing the case, the nun admits she left mass early that night. While Anna's religiously extremist family was still at church, Michael saw Lib's actions, as well as Will escaping with the child on horseback. Shockingly, she doesn't raise an alarm or snitch in the aftermath, opting to call Will an "angel." She just wants to know if the girl's in a better place, which Lib admits to before leaving town.

This is big because the nun and Lib never got along. Lib, after all, lost her baby and her husband left her, not to mention she saw a lot of death working infirmaries during wartime. Thus, she had no faith and didn't believe in religion. But Michael knows this isn't what God would have wanted, sussing out how the family was using Anna to fake martyrdom and repent for their sins. Ultimately, she's the one who allows Lib's plan to unfold, believing the young girl's safety is part of her higher calling.

See how Sister Michael is an unsung hero in The Wonder, now streaming on Netflix.
