It seems like it's been ages since The Wolverine was announced, but finally we're close to getting our first real look at the upcoming superhero film. Well, closer than we have been, as the first teaser is expected to premiere before G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
Director James Mangold revealed the prospective release date over Twitter, saying, "Tell me you think we're lame after you see the teaser. At least then you will be critiquing images from the film, not a marketing window... From end of March till release, you'll be saturated. Relax, yuk. I've never found the coolest people are the first to arrive at a party."
The Wolverine's teaser definitely won't be arriving first. We've been inundated with images from the movie, but we've yet to see any actual footage. G.I. Joe: Retaliation opens March 29, and considering The Wolverine is due out on July 26, it seems like Fox is waiting quite a while to gauge audience reactions.
Does that bode well or poorly for The Wolverine? Hopefully well, as the film seems like a great spin on the previous X-Men films. This time, Logan heads back to Japan after spending prison time in Nagasaki years earlier, and producer Hugh Parker described the character as being "so out of his element." In addition, leading man Hugh Jackman thinks that this is the best version of Wolverine we've ever seen.
“I still don’t think we’ve seen the definitive Wolverine,” the actor told Empire. “And the longer I play the character, the more the desire to get him right grows. The more I speak to fans and explore his world, the more it means to me. I understand the character and the legacy and I don’t feel, up to this movie, that we’ve completely lived up to that. So that’s what I intend to do.”
The Wolverine also stars Will Yun Lee, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima and Brian Tee.
