The Wolverine Casts Silver Samurai

On the heels of Monday's casting news, Variety reports Fox's The Wolverine has finally landed its armor-clad Silver Samurai.

Will Yun Lee, who appeared on TNT's Witchblade and NBC's Bionic Woman, will play Kenuichio Harada, the mutant half-brother of Wolverine's ex-lover Mariko Yashida. The trade paper also confirmed the additions of Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto and Rila Fukushima, as well as Brian Tee.

Created by Steve Gerber and Bob Brown, the Silver Samurai is the son of Yakuza Shingen Yashida with the ability to charge most anything, usually his katana, with an energy described as a tachyon field. A bodyguard for the terrorist Viper and an occasional mercenary, he has crossed blades with Wolverine, Daredevil and other Marvel superheroes.

Based in part on the 1982 Wolverine miniseries by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, the James Mangold-directed film has Logan (played again by Hugh Jackman) battling ninjas and the politics of the Tokyo criminal underworld for the heart of his ex-lover, the daughter of a Japanese crime lord.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tee (Grimm, Burn Notice) will portray a corrupt minister of justice who's supposed to marry Mariko.

Filming is set to begin next month in Australia before moving to Japan. The Wolverine opens July 26, 2013.
