After a number of reports concerning the series' production, Netflix recently announced that Season 3 of The Witcher has officially begun filming.

The streaming giant marked the occasion with the first official photo from the Witcher set, featuring stars Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra and Freya Allen seated and in costume as Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg and Ciri, respectively. On top of that, Netflix dropped the official synopsis for Season 3, teasing chaos across the Continent and the next step in Ciri's training.

"As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever."

Few details concerning the plot and characters of Season 3 have been released. Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich previously suggested that the show will adhere more closely to the books than its predecessor, stating, "It's a really fun season and it follows a particular book really closely. It has a lot of action, some death." Season 3 will predominately adapt the events of Andrzej Sapkowski's novel, Time of Contempt, the second novel in the main Witcher saga.

Following a prolonged delay due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Netflix released Season 2 of The Witcher in December 2021. In spite of the long wait, the show proved to be every bit as popular as Season 1. It was reported that The Witcher Season 2 amassed 2.2 billion viewership minutes over its first week in release and dominated Nielsen's Top 10 SVOD ratings charts for the week of Monday, Dec. 13 to Sunday, Dec. 19.

However, fans of the franchise were treated to other projects set in Netflix's Witcher universe. Between The Witcher Season 1 and Season 2, Netflix released The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf-- an anime spinoff film centered on Vesemir and Kaer Morhen's past. Meanwhile, though Season 3 may seem some time away, audiences can look forward to exploring the Continent further in the upcoming prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, a live-action miniseries set 1,200 years prior to the events of the main series.
