In recent weeks, it was reported actor Henry Cavill was forced to step away from filming Season 3 of The Witcher after testing positive for COVID-19. New reports suggest the actor recently returned.

Redanian Intelligence reported Cavill is now back on set after two weeks away. The temporary hiatus has delayed filming wrap, though the production was able to continue filming certain scenes without its central star, as there are a number of major scenes that do not feature his character, Geralt of Rivia. The report suggests filming will now wrap sometime in September.

Season 3 of The Witcher will adapt Andrzej Sapkowski's Time of Contempt, the fourth novel in the series and the second novel in the main Witcher saga. Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich previously assured audiences and fans of the novels that the upcoming third season, unlike Season 2, will adhere to the source material more closely. Speaking at Lucca Comics & Games, she said, "It's a really fun season and it follows a particular book really closely. It has a lot of action, some death."

Expanding the Continent of The Witcher

Photos from the set of The Witcher Season 3 appear to confirm this, as reports suggest several key events are being filmed, including a pivotal fight involving Geralt of Rivia and the Brotherhood of Sorcerers. However, production has also seemingly revealed events from previous novels, including Blood of Elves and even Sword of Destiny, will also appear in Season 3. It's uncertain how they will be reshaped and adapted to fit into the ongoing story.

Netflix appears intent on expanding the world of its Witcher adaptation. Since the release of the first season, the franchise has seen the development of several inter-connected projects, including The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, an anime film exploring Vesemir and Kaer Morhen's ancient past; as well as the upcoming The Witcher: Blood Origin, an anime -- reportedly titled The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep -- and a family-friendly Witcher project.

That's all on top of the ongoing main series, which already has a fourth season in development, according to The Witcher director Stephen Surjik. He previously explained, "The writers and producers mapped out Season 4... I don't know if I'm part of that mapping program, but at least they told me that they're mapping it out."

The Witcher Season 3 does not currently have a premiere date. All two seasons, as well as The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, are available for streaming on Netflix.
