The recently released trailer for Season 2 of The Witcher debuted actor Kim Bodnia as Vesemir, after months of deliberate absence from marketing. That wasn't all the streaming giant had for eager fans. Netflix also released two stills featuring Vesemir, with the ruins of Kaer Morhen and the School of the Wolf behind him.

At first glance, neither still appears to reveal anything other than Vesemir's presence in the show. But those who have been paying attention to reports from the set of The Witcher Season 2 may see at least one of those images differently. In fact, they might see something resembling a tragic story in there. We're talking about the still featuring Vesemir holding a witcher medallion in his hands, staring up at something potentially upsetting out of frame.

Before theorizing about what the old wolf could be staring at with that much despair, it's best to take a look back at some of the reports and rumors that came out while filming was underway, all of which seemed to uncover pieces of what audiences will see at Kaer Morhen in Season 2.

There were rumors when filming, began back in February 2020, suggesting that the upcoming season would feature a leshen-- the monstrous forest spirit mentioned in Andrzej Sapkowski's novels but properly introduced in CD Projekt Red's video games. Moreover, it was reported that the creature would have "serious consequences."

Later on, when production restarted after its pandemic-related hiatus, reports came out suggesting that a major battle had been filmed at the Kaer Morhen set. The battle involved everyone at the mountain fortress, including Geralt of Rivia, Ciri, Vesemir, Lambert, Eskel, Coën, the original character Hemrik and several others. Rumors circulated that the battle would have a major impact on the characters. While this battle marks a major deviation from The Witcher novels, it was nothing compared to the reports that followed soon after.

Early this year, it was reported that a funeral-like scene had been filmed, following a death scene featuring Eskel, played by actor Basil Eidenbenz. It was a particularly violent one, with the character's corpse filmed being devoured by wolves. There's little evidence linking the battle with the death, but it seems more than a little coincidental. What seems clear, with the recently released still, is that the School of the Wolf will see a major loss and it's likely Eskel's medallion Vesemir is holding in the image.

In The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, the anime tie-in film that introduced Netflix's version of Kaer Morhen, audiences were shown that one of the mountain fortress' halls possessed a tree whose branches were adorned with dozens of medallions. Each one belonged to a fallen witcher. It seems at least a little likely that Vesemir is staring up at that tree, readying himself to place one more medallion on its branches.

This is more or less speculation based on a collection of vague reports. But with actor Paul Bullion, who plays Lambert, confirming that the leshen will appear, it is worth considering that the tragic fate of Eskel is the story behind the recently released still, and it shows how much Vesemir cares about his companions, many of which -- as Nightmare of the Wolf showed -- he essentially raised.
