It was recently reported that Netflix had shut down production on a number of projects in the United States and Canada due to growing concerns regarding the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It has now been reported that The Witcher has been added to that list.

For a while it seemed that Season 2 of fantasy series, which had been filming in the UK, would continue as planned. Now it appears that production will be suspended for at least two weeks, according to a memo that was sent to crew members. It is currently unknown how this temporary hiatus will impact the production in the future, as filming was scheduled to wrap in August.

As for whether or not this pause will affect the release: the exact release date of Season 2 has been left somewhat ambiguous. Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich has stated in the past that beyond the release year of 2021, the series does not yet have a target launch date. This was intentional so as to allow the show as much time as necessary to be produced.

The ongoing pandemic has severely affected the entertainment industry, as it has virtually all industries around the globe. All major studios have shut down production on ongoing projects in order to limit the impact of the viral outbreak. COVID-19 has infected more than 150,000 people worldwide, according to recent statistics from the World Health Organization.

The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri and Joey Batey as Jaskier. Season 1 is now available on Netflix.
