The Witcher Season 2 is just around the corner and there are a few details out there already, teasing some of the surprises that the Netflix series has in store for both franchise newcomers and those familiar with Andrzej Sapkowski's novels.

Speaking at a live Q&A session attended by CBR, star Henry Cavill discussed the monsters that will appear throughout the show. "There's lots of monsters and they're all very exciting. There's a new origin story based around them," the actor explained before cutting off. He added, "I don't want to say too much, actually, because there's a lot for everyone to discover still."

Though he stopped short of revealing how much the origin of the Continent's monsters might deviate from the established Witcher lore, he went on to talk about the overall look of these monsters and praised the VFX team and artists, including Andrew Law, who helped design the creatures.

Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich has previously teased that Season 2, though an adaptation of Blood of Elves, will feature more monsters than were present in the novels. She explained, "Blood of Elves lacks monsters. There's just not very many. But we know from the games that people really like to see Geralt battling monsters, so we continued adding more monsters to Season 2." Among these beasts are Nivellen and the bruxa, which were adapted from The Last Wish, as well as the leshy and the myriapod, which appear in some of Season 2's trailers and clips.

The showrunner went further at Netflix's TUDUM event, teasing even more monsters to come in Season 3, which was announced alongside a family-friendly series and an anime project separate from The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, details for which have not yet been announced. However, executive producer Tomek Baginski recently confirmed that the the anime project has a first draft and revealed it will be based entirely on Sapkowski's Witcher novels, using one particular short story as inspiration, though he did not reveal which short story it is.

The Witcher Season 2 largely adapts Blood of Elves, which sees Geralt of Rivia take Ciri to Kaer Morhen for the winter, where the Cintran princess trains to fight and learns about magic under the guidance of the School of the Wolf's remaining monster slayers and Triss.

The Witcher Season 2 is scheduled to be released on Netflix on Dec. 17.
