According to The Witcher star Henry Cavill, fans can expect Geralt of Rivia to adapt to his newfound parental role in Season 2 of the Netflix series.

Cavill spoke to Entertainment Weekly regarding the changes to Geralt in the upcoming season, suggesting that the wandering witcher would be adopting a more paternal role. He said, "While he hasn't necessarily been someone who craved children, he does take quite naturally to being a protector." Season 1 ended with the character assuming the role of guardian to his Child of Surprise Princess Cirilla, a bond long in the making due to their entwined destinies.

The character's nature as a protector was teased throughout Season 1, which was based on the series of short stories written by Andrzej Sapkowski in The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny. While often somewhat reluctant to get involved, Geralt found himself coming to the rescue of various characters, including Jaskier and Yennefer. As for his bond with Ciri, it came of Geralt unthinkingly asking to be rewarded with the Law of Surprise after rescuing Ciri's parents. The characters are now tied together by destiny, which the series presents as an inescapable and very powerful force.

Cavill commented on the complexity of the character, stating that there was more to him than his grumpy exterior. "What I'm trying to do is bring [out] more of that intellectual, philosophical, wise Geralt," he said. More than just a mere monster slayer, the Geralt in the books and games is depicted as more of a thinker, operating by his own personal code. Hints of this were also shown during the Netflix series, such as his refusal to kill creatures that demonstrated intelligence and were thus potentially open to peaceful solutions.

Geralt's evolving role as a parental figure to Ciri, who lost the rest of her family in Cintra during Season 1, should also be no surprise to fans. Season 2 is set to adapt the events of Blood of Elves, the book which first deviated from the short stories and embraced the overarching narrative of the series. Season 2 trailers also showed that Geralt would be taking Ciri to Kaer Morhen, the old keep for witchers last seen in the Netflix animated movie The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.

The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia and Freya Allan as Ciri. Season 2 is set to premiere on Netflix Dec. 17.
