Netflix's The Witcher made headlines with the announcement that star Henry Cavill will be leaving the show after the upcoming third season. Executive producer Tomasz "Tomek" Bagiński recently responded to the news and compared the role of Geralt of Rivia to the ever-changing face of James Bond.

On Facebook, Bagiński wrote (translated from Polish), "I realize yesterday's announcement shocked at least as much as Elon's takeover of Twitter, but the world survived not such surprises. The Witcher can make it. The third season is very strong. There are only a few years until the fourth. Bond and Batman discover something new and interesting with each change of appearance. We have the time. Geralt is in the same league."

A Stir Among Witcher Fans

Cavill announced his exit from the series on Oct. 29 on social media. He explained that Season 3 of the Netflix series will feature his last appearance as Geralt of Rivia. Season 4, which has been officially been announced and will be written and filmed back-to-back with Season 5, will instead feature actor Liam Hemsworth as the new face of the titular monster slayer.

The news caused an uproar from the hit-fantasy series' fanbase, with some going so far as to call for Netflix to cancel the entire series. Much of the discussion has partly been fueled by controversy sparked by former writer Beau DeMayo, who revealed some members of the writers' room of The Witcher Season 1 actively disliked the source material, going on to state, "It's a recipe for disaster and bad morale. Fandom as a litmus test checks egos, and makes all the long nights worth it. You have to respect the work before you're allowed to add to its legacy."

The Witcher Season 3 will adapt the events and characters of Andrzej Sapkowski's Time of Contempt. The official synopsis for the series teases the hunt for Princess Cirilla of Cintra, now under the protection and tutelage of the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg and, of course, Geralt of Rivia. Fleeing to Aretuza following the events of Season 2, the group will encounter dark magic, political corruption and more.

The Witcher Season 3 is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2023.
