A new featurette for Netflix's The Witcher Season 2 explores the Wild Hunt, who have been mentioned throughout the series and will apparently play a larger role than the spectres do in Andrzej Sapkowski's novels.

Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich explains in the recently released featurette that it was the popularity of CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and the familiarity with the ghostly riders that compelled the series to introduce them earlier than fans may have expected. More than that, Hissrich teased that there is more to come and that the Netflix franchise will explore each rider and their backstory.

As hinted in the clip, this will likely be done in the upcoming prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, which will reportedly feature the King of the Wild Hunt, Eredin Bréacc Glas, played by actor Jacob Collins-Levy. The first trailer for the show premiered at the end of The Witcher Season 2 and showcased the ancient Elven world Blood Origin will explore. However, none of the Wild Hunt riders were shown.

It's worth noting that much of Season 2 revolved around an ancient demon, Voleth Meir, who was later shown to be one of the riders of the Wild Hunt, trapped on the Continent after the Conjunction of the Spheres, as Geralt of Rivia explained. Audiences are likely to see the return of Voleth Meir in Blood Origin, as the series is set 1,200 years before the main series in the aftermath of the cataclysmic merging of worlds-- an event touched on throughout Season 2.

The creation of Voleth Meir, who was created specifically for the series, was described by Hissrich as being necessary for the story. She previously explained, "We started to talk about how to introduce a season-long villain, not just the monsters that Geralt is fighting in every episode. And furthermore, we talked about how that villain could start to tie together Yennefer's story, Geralt's story, Ciri's story-- without them all being on-screen together yet."

As The Witcher: Blood Origin is not directly based on any of the events explored in Sapkowski's novels, it will feature a full cast of original characters, some of which are related to known figures in Witcher lore. For the most part, Blood Origin will center on three main elven characters: Éile, Fjall and Scían, played by Sophia Brown, Laurence O’Fuarain and Michelle Yeoh, respectively. They will reportedly hail from different clans, though the relationship between each clan is uncertain.

No release date has yet been announced for The Witcher: Blood Origin. The Witcher Season 2, meanwhile, is available for streaming on Netflix.
