An animated tie-in film for Netflix's The Witcher was rumored to be in development for a while. Its existence was only recently proven when a WGA entry clued fans in on the title and writer involved. Following the reports, Netflix has officially confirmed The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and provided a few more exciting morsels of information.In a post on social media, Netflix announced, "The rumors are true, a new Witcher story is in the works!" The post also revealed that the upcoming project isn't just animated, it's anime. The post explained, "The anime film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, will take us back to a new threat facing the Continent." The film is being developed by Netflix series showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich and writer Beau DeMayo together with South Korean animation studio, Studio Mir-- the same studio behind the successful Avatar: The Last Airbender sequel series: The Legend of Korra.
The involvement of Studio Mir means that audiences may be able to expect traditional animation with occasional use of computer-generated imagery, which is how the studio approached Legend of Korra throughout all four seasons.
Season 2 of The Witcher will soon enter production and is currently scheduled for 2021. Executive producer Tomasz Bagiński teased multiple surprises to tide fans over until then. The upcoming anime film is possibly just one such surprise. While audiences will clearly see more of The Continent, it is currently unknown if Witcher stars Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra or Freya Allan, or their respective characters, are involved in The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf in any way.
The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri and Joey Batey as Jaskier. Season 1 is now available for streaming on Netflix.
