While working on The Witcher Season 2, Henry Cavill finally had time to replay the games that helped catapult Geralt of Rivia to international stardom -- and made sure to do so on the highest difficulty settings.

"I decided to put it on the hardest difficulty possible to play, which I’ve done before, and it was really quite stressful! I forgot quite how stressful it was," Cavill told Total Film magazine, explaining how the COVID-19 pandemic had offered him the hours needed to revisit the digital version of Geralt. "These days I’m not rich in time and so I haven’t unfortunately had too much of a chance to have a go with the games again."

All three games in Polish developer CD Projekt Red's The Witcher trilogy have featured multiple difficulty levels. The first Witcher game's trickiest level was simply dubbed Hard, and described as "for advanced gamers." The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings featured a Hard level where enemies did high damage, as well as an Insane level that would disable loading a saved game if Geralt died. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had a slightly more forgiving (but still very difficult) level entitled Death March, where many enemies -- particularly at beginning levels -- were capable of killing Geralt in one shot.

Cavill is a noted PC devotee who proudly shared footage of his gaming rig building process on social media last year, including a selfie in front of his Nvidia GeFORCE RTX 3090 graphics card at Christmas. The actor has sung the praises of The Witcher games in the past, and regularly mentions in interviews that CD Projekt Red's trilogy was his gateway into the fantasy world originally developed by author Andrzej Sapkowski. In July, Cavill also stated that his gruff voice for Geralt was inspired by the vocals of voice actor Doug Cockle, who plays the monster hunter in the games.

Aside from getting into his role by playing the games, Cavill also pushed for Geralt to have more dialogue in Season 2, arguing that the character had an expressive and emotional inner monologue in the books that didn't always come across in Season 1.

Season 2 of The Witcher will be released on Dec. 17, and a third season has already been announced along with a slew of other projects, including a family-friendly spinoff. All of Season 1, as well as an anime tie-in film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, are currently available for streaming on Netflix.
