The world of Netflix's The Witcher is expanding with several spinoffs and new seasons in development and one nearing release. Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich has a few ideas for yet another, this one stemming from conversations about The Witcher: Blood Origin.

Speaking to Polish outlet Kultura, Hissrich discussed the ancient world of Blood Origin and going even further back in the Continent's history in future spinoff shows. She said (translated from Polish), "We could go back to the roots and genesis of particular events for a really long time. I was also wondering what the Golden Age of the elves was like because it seems so romantic. This may not be a popular opinion among The Witcher fans, but I have a feeling that these stories are waiting to be discovered. There are so many directions in which you can go and constantly develop them."

Hissrich also discussed the beginnings of Blood Origin, which began as an idea back before Season 1 of The Witcher had premiered. The event known as the Conjunction of the Spheres or the origins of witchers have not been explored in Andrzej Sapkowski's novels and was something that the creative team behind the Netflix series wanted to explore. An interview with Blood Origin showrunner Declan de Barra previously suggested it was the frustration with the lack of exploration in the novels that led to the upcoming limited series.

The Many Witcher Spinoffs in the Works

In the recent interview, Hissrich discussed a rough plan to produce more spinoffs to fill the gaps of time between each season of the main Witcher series, just as The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf released between Seasons 1 and 2, and The Witcher: Blood Origin will release between Seasons 2 and 3, suggesting fans can expect numerous spinoffs in the future. Of the officially announced projects, only the family-friendly Witcher spinoff has yet to be properly revealed, though Hissrich herself teased it at Netflix's TUDUM event in 2021.

It was previously reported that a new anime project was in the works, currently titled The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep. Details are currently unknown and it is uncertain when this spinoff will be released. Additionally, a new live-action project centered on The Rats is currently underway and is believed to be targeting release between Seasons 3 and 4 of the main show. It should be noted neither of these projects have been confirmed and no official announcements have been made.

The Witcher franchise is currently in a predicament with audiences. There has been widespread backlash due to claims of the writers room's dislike of Sapkowski's novels and CD Projekt Red's games, which have been linked to Henry Cavill's recent announcement that he would no longer play Geralt of Rivia. Further fueling the discourse surrounding the franchise are the largely negative reviews for The Witcher: Blood Origin, which describe the show as rushed and underwhelming.

The Witcher Season 3 is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2023. The Witcher: Blood Origin will premiere on Dec. 25, only on Netflix.
