Netflix's upcoming fantasy series, The Witcher, has steadily garnered excitement since the release of the main trailer last week.

Adding to the hype are a set of dramatic new character posters released on social media. They feature two of the show's main protagonists. Anya Chalotra appears in a single poster as the powerful sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg, wearing an elaborate black gown and her distinctive medallion; Freya Allan appears as princess Cirilla in two posters, one featuring her royal attire and the other featuring clothing befitting royalty on the run.

The series adapts the events of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski's novels, predominately The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny. These images alone showcase that fact quite well, bringing to life the appearances of each character as Sapkowski described them. They are also a reminder of how the novels following both Ciri and Yennefer as much as they do the titular witcher, Geralt of Rivia. Showrunner Lauren Hissrich has stated in the past that it was her intention for the upcoming series to do the same.

Yennefer is a powerful sorceress, one far older than she appears. In many ways, she is bound by destiny to both Geralt and Ciri, the latter of which becomes something of a daughter figure. Ciri, princess of Cintra, is destined for greatness in more ways than one, which is the reason why she finds herself hunted by powerful figures with differing agendas throughout the course of the story.

The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri and Joey Batey as Jaskier. The series will be available to stream on Netflix starting December 20.
