The ages of the characters in The Witcher are a bit of a mystery. Between the original books, the videogames, and the Netflix TV show, ages not only vary but some of them are not even mentioned. This leaves fans on a wild hunt for information comparing timelines, events, and whatever little information is given to discover the ages of their beloved characters.

While neither the books nor the TV episodes are released chronologically, Netflix has been kind enough to release a timeline for the show which is an experience all on its own. This timeline still lacks information, as does the timeline on the The Witcher fandom Wiki. Further, statements in the books contradict each other or come from unreliable characters. That said, an official timeline would help resolve the fandom's questions.

Updated on December 20, 2023 by Ajay Aravind: With Season 3 out on Netflix, fans can't wait to see what The Witcher has in store for their beloved fan-favorite characters in the upcoming seasons. With Henry Cavill's departure, however, whether Liam Hemsworth can fulfill such a significant role remains to be seen. In any case, we've revamped this list of Witcher characters and their ages.

The author of The Witcher novels prefers Henry Cavill over others as the voice of Geralt after watching the actor’s performance in the Netflix show.

According to Netflix, Stregobor was born in 786, which makes him 445 during the hunt for Renfri in Blaviken in 1231. In the books, Stregorbor has a much less important character arc. He's a master illusionist from Kovir and a staunch believer in The Curse of the Black Sun, which makes him hunt Renfri.

However, after her death and a threat from Geralt, he returns to Kovir. In the Netflix show, however, he is an active member of the Brotherhood of Sorcerers and the rector at Ban Ard Academy. It seems that the Netflix character is a combination of Gerhart of Aelle, the rector at Ban Ard, and Stregobor the Black Sun believer.

9 Triss Merigold Specializes In Healing Magic And Potioneering

Age: Unknown

Triss Merigold of Maribor is a great mage specializing in healing and potions, which is ironic, as she is allergic to the potions she creates herself. There is no concrete information regarding her date of birth, but it is safe to assume that she is somewhat younger than Yennefer.

While studying at Aretuza, Triss befriends Yennefer, who is already a fully-fledged sorceress at the time, and the two of them are already great friends and colleagues by 1249. In the Netflix show, Triss meets Geralt for the first time in 1243 to fight the Striga. She is wrongly assumed dead during the Battle of Sodden Hill. Triss' exact age remains unknown.

8 Istredd

Age: 94+

Istredd is one of the characters whose age changes depending on whether he's in the book or in the Netflix show. In the books, he is a long-time lover of Yennefer's, and he and Yennefer have known each other for years. In addition, he's known to have studied under a mage named Roedskilde.

In the Netflix show, Istredd studies at Ban Ard, the male counterpart to Aretuza, approximately around the same time as Yennefer's studies. This would indicate that the show version of Istredd is about the same age as Yennefer. According to the fanon, he was born in 1169, which makes him 4 years older than the book version of Yennefer.

7 Cahir Is Consistently Described As Young In The Books

The Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski gets honest about his role in the Netflix series, which is expected to return for more seasons.

Neither the books nor Netflix gives a date for the birth of Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach. Throughout the Witcher books, he is consistently described as being young for his rank of officer and later receives the political title of count. He was 10 when his brother died, though that death does not have a timestamp either.

According to a description from Assire var Anahid, a mage not yet in the Netflix show, Cahir gets involved in the search for Ciri after The White Flame has already been searching for a long time. From this fans can deduce that Cahir is at least 4-5 years older than Ciri, and 16-18 during the Slaughter of Cintra. In 1267, Geralt guesses that Cahir is 25 years old, making him up to 10 years older than Ciri.

6 Tissaia De Vries Is Known To Be Extremely Old

Age: 300+

In all versions of The Witcher, Tissaia de Vries remains a mystery up until taking Yennefer on as a student. She is known to be very very old, but no one quite knows just how old she is. She is older than the Elf Queen and sorceress Francesca Findabair, though the latter's age is also unknown according to the books.

Some fans mentioned that Tissaia was a mentor for Philippa Eilhart, the sorceress who can morph into an owl, who is described by Jaskier to be no less than 300 years old. This means that Tissaia is a fair amount older than 300, as she would already need to be an accomplished sorceress to mentor students.

5 Fringilla Vigo's Character Arc Has Been A Roller Coaster

Age: Unknown

In the Netflix show, Fringilla Vigo is a student at Aretuza at the same time as Yennefer, making them about the same age. In the books, there is no concrete information regarding her age, but she is a Nilfgaardian sorceress and fights for Nilfgaard during the Battle of Sodden Hill. Fringilla is followed more in the Netflix show than in the books.

Viewers get to experience her journey and character growth as she forms an alliance with Francesca and the elves, and attempts a grasp of power. As of Season 3, Fringilla manages to escape her prison and teams up with Francesca, hoping to overthrow Emhyr.

4 Jaskier's Relative Youth Doesn't Make Him Any Less Courageous

The Witcher's resident musician, Jaskier was born in 1229 according to the books, and 1222 according to Netflix. In the books, he graduates from Oxenfurt Academy and becomes a professor. However, he decides to explore the world and devote his life to poetry after spending a year as an academic.

This makes him 19 years old when he first meets Geralt in 1248. In the Netflix show, he is 18 when he first meets Geralt in 1240. Following Netflix's timeline that makes Jaskier 40 years old when he joins Geralt and Yen on the dragon hunt in 1262. As such, it's not surprising that Geralt sees Jaskier as a substitute younger brother.

3 Cirilla Is Arguably The Most Important Person On The Continent

Age: 16

Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon was, according to the books, born in either 1252 or 1253 — most likely during the Belleteyn. This makes Ciri 10-11 years old during the Slaughter of Cintra in 1263, and 11-12 when she and Geralt finally meet in 1264.

In 1265, she begins her training with the witchers at Kaer Morhen, where they are joined by Triss Merigold who helps Ciri control her unwieldy magic. In the Netflix show, Ciri is born in 1250 making her a few years older, and she meets Geralt in 1263, the same year as the Battle of Sodden Hill and the Slaughter of Cintra. Netflix Ciri is approximately 16 years old at this point in the story.

Fans have long wondered how old Yennefer is. Yennefer of Vengerberg was born during the Belleteyn in 1173, on the night between April 30th and May 1st. She is only 13 years old when she graduates as a sorceress from Aretuza after three years of studies. However, as mages can halt their aging, Yennefer is actually 75 when she meets Geralt of Rivia for the very first time in 1248, which may surprise fans of the Netflix show.

During the Battle of Sodden Hill in 1263, which takes place in the first season finale, Yennefer is 90 years old. In the Netflix show, Yennefer is a fair bit younger, having been born in 1192. As such, there's a 19-year gap between Yennefer's age in the show and the novels.

1 Geralt Doesn't Have A Specific Birthdate In The Books

Age: 106+

Geralt of Rivia is initially left with the witchers in Kaer Morhen, who offer him the training and companionship he needs. Unfortunately, he is yet another character without a birthdate in the books. In an interview, Andrzej Sapkowski said Geralt was over 50 years old during the events of Baptism of Fire which takes place in 1267, putting him in his fifties when meeting Ciri in 1264.

In the Netflix show, Geralt is born in 1160, making him 80 when he first meets Jaskier in 1240, 88 when meeting Yennefer in 1248, and 104 when he encounters Ciri in 1264. This is technically still above 50 years old as Sapkowski described. As such, Geralt will begin Part 2 of The Witcher's third season as a 106-year-old.
