As spinoffs of Netflix's The Witcher progress through development, new information continues to surface through leaks and casting announcements.A casting call was recently put out by Sophie Holland Casting for a supporting role in a six-episode series. The role, a character named "Z," requires a woman between the ages of 20 and 45. She is described as "A mystical and earthly conduit with cerebral palsy. This incredibly powerful female becomes part of a motley crew on a quest for vengeance." Additionally, the casting call states, "We are looking for authenticity for this role and performers who can relate to the character. We welcome actors with similar disabilities to the character or shared experiences with character."
As details regarding the plot of the miniseries remain scarce, the mention of a "motley crew" and its quest is significant. Previous casting calls have revealed a number of mysterious new characters, including at least one of the show's apparent leads: an elf named Eile "The Lark" Lithe. Rumored characters include another elf named Fjall and Princess Merwyn. As of yet, only Eile has been supported by multiple reports.
Previous rumors have also suggested that the series would film between May and December 2021. The casting call for "Z"Â suggests a substantially shorter filming schedule lasting between May and September.
The Witcher: Blood Origin is set to take place approximately 1,200 years prior to the events of the main series, covering the aftermath of a cataclysmic event described in Andrzej Sapkowski's novels as the Conjunction of the Spheres. The event saw entire universes collide, allowing civilizations and creatures from other worlds -- including humans and monsters -- to populate the Continent. The upcoming series will also explore the appearance of the first witcher.
Netflix's upcoming series is being helmed by The Witcher writer Declan de Barra alongside Lauren S. Hissrich, who serves as showrunner on the main series. No official release date for The Witcher: Blood Origin has been announced.
In addition to the upcoming limited series, Netflix is currently developing at least two other spinoff projects, including the anime film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, which centers on the witcher master known as Vesemir; and an untitled project focused on magic users on the Continent.
Season 2 of The Witcher is currently filming in the United Kingdom and is scheduled to wrap in February 2021. The series is set to adapt the events of Sapkowski's novels, Blood of Elves and Time of Contempt, as well as short stories from Sword of Destiny.
The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri and Joey Batey as Jaskier. Season 1 is now available on Netflix.
