According to its developer, The Witcher 4 will reportedly kick off a brand-new saga in the franchise.

"We said that there will be a new saga," CD Projekt CEO Adam Kiciński said after being questioned by an investor during the company's financial report call, asking for clarification on the franchise's future. "Of course, now we are pre-producing the first game of this saga. But we have in mind more than one. The first saga was three games, so now we're thinking about more than one game. But we are in pre-production on the first game from the second Witcher saga."

News on the project has remained scarce since the company first announced The Witcher 4 with a mysterious poster in March. The image shows a medallion, similar to the one Geralt wears honoring the School of the Wolf, but with a shape that did not match any known schools in the game or books. CD Projekt Red seemingly confirmed The Witcher 4 would introduce a new school to the game when the Global Community Manager for the developer, Marcin Momot, responded with a nodding gif to a fan's comment that the medallion looked like a lynx.

So far, The Witcher games canon contains eight official schools, with only the Wolf given much focus in the novels. Besides the Wolf, these schools include the School of the Bear, School of the Viper, School of the Cat, School of the Griffin, and two established in the Korath Desert, the School of the Crane and the School of the Manticore. Though not official, the School of the Lynx has appeared frequently in fan fiction.

Also as part of its reveal, CD Projekt Red announced it would build the latest entry on the new Unreal Engine 5. "We're moving from REDengine to Unreal Engine 5, beginning a multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games... We'll closely collaborate with Epic Games' developers, with the primary goal being to help tailor the engine for open-world experiences."

Since the initial reveal, details have remained scarce. Fans speculated that the snow in the reveal poster indicated that The Witcher 4 takes place in one of the northern territories, most likely Kovir or Poviss in the Northern Kingdoms or even the Far North itself. Other theories center on the identity of the new protagonist, with some speculating that Geralt's adopted daughter, Ciri, will take center stage in the new games. Rumors aside, the latest official news before today's financial call came in May, when CD Projekt Red revealed The Witcher 4 had concluded its research phase and would now enter pre-production.
