A video game retail chain employee leaked the alleged release date of the next-gen upgrade for CD Projekt Red's critically acclaimed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

A worker for United Kingdom-based video game retailer Game posted a picture of what they claim to be their branch's upcoming available pre-orders, along with what appears to be the scheduled release dates for each title. A closer inspection of the list revealed The Witcher 3's updated release date, which scheduled the beloved threequel for an alleged launch on exactly Dec. 9, 2022. The list also specifically noted The Witcher 3 will be packaged under its Game of the Year Edition, which included the main game, along with all of its previous DLCs and expansion packs.

Development for the next-gen upgrade for The Witcher 3 has been of some concern to longtime fans of the franchise. The upgraded The Witcher 3 was announced back in 2020 and originally scheduled for release in 2021. Developers then moved its release to sometime in Q2 for 2022, before they announced an indefinite hiatus on development in April 2022. One of the developers additionally released a statement denying rumors that the next-gen launch of The Witcher 3 was in development hell.

The Witcher 3's production troubles reportedly soon came to an end, being that CD Projekt Red released another news update on the upgrade's release schedule during the game's 7th-anniversary celebration. The Polish video game developer revealed it expected to deliver the much-awaited upgrade sooner than expected, setting the next-gen The Witcher 3's release sometime in Q4 of 2022. This notably corroborated the information provided by the alleged leak from the Game employee, which claimed The Witcher 3 will appear on store shelves by early December of this year.

CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński also previously discussed the franchise's next mainline entry, The Witcher 4, which the executive confirmed was to be the start of a new series of The Witcher titles. "Of course, now we are pre-producing the first game of this saga," Kiciński explained to investors during CD Projekt Red's financial report call. "But we have in mind more than one. The first saga was three games, so now we're thinking about more than one game. But we are in pre-production on the first game from the second Witcher saga."

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. At the time of writing, CD Projekt Red has not officially confirmed a specific release date for the next-gen version of The Witcher 3 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
