The CW has released a new trailer for The Winchesters that has Supernatural fans amped about the upcoming prequel series.

"Every family has a backstory. This one is ours," states Jensen Ackles' Dean Winchester at the beginning of the trailer which features some new footage from The Winchesters. The Supernatural prequel series will be told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester as he attempts to uncover the truth about his and Sam's parents, John and Mary. The Winchesters begins shortly after John Winchester returns home from Vietnam and meets monster hunter Mary Campbell. The series will reveal "the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary, and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world."

The Winchesters marks The CW's third attempt at a Supernatural spinoff after Bloodlines and Wayward Sisters. It is also the first to not be released as a backdoor pilot on Supernatural and the first to receive a series order. Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger will play Mary and John Winchester, respectively, in the series. Mary was previously portrayed by Samantha Smith and Amy Gumenick in Supernatural, while John was played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Matt Cohen at different points in the original series.

The Winchesters Will Not Undo Supernatural Canon

Several Supernatural fans have pointed out that The Winchesters seemingly contradicts a major story point from Supernatural, namely, the fact that John didn't know Mary was a hunter until after her death. However, Ackles has assured fans that the prequel series will not go against the already established canon. "We were sitting around when COVID hit going, 'You know what would be cool? If we went back in time and we actually saw the story of mom and dad and how they met — but do it in a way that skews the narrative so that we hit those waypoints that we established on Supernatural but get you from A to B, B to C, C to D in a way that is really unexpected,'" Ackles said. "And then we found a way to continue that story in a way that might be surprising, but always keeping in our back pocket getting us back to the mythology that is established, which is not an easy task. It's not an easy map to draw, but we're doing our best."
