The Winchesters and Kung Fu have both been canceled by The CW.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, both The Winchesters and Kung Fu have been canceled by The CW and won't return for the 2023-24 television season. "As we reimagine the new CW, we had to make some tough programming decisions," the network said of the decision. "We thank our partners at Warner Bros. and the casts and creative teams of Kung Fu and The Winchesters for all their hard work, creativity and dedication."

The decision to cancel the shows comes after Nexstar Media Group purchased The CW in Oct. 2022. In April 2023, only renewed one scripted show, All American, for a new season, while several others -- All American: Homecoming, Gotham Knights, Kung Fu, Superman & Lois, Walker, Walker: Independence and The Winchesters -- were left in a state of limbo. On May 9, 2023, The CW further announced Walker: Independence had been canceled after just one season, while Walker was renewed with a shortened fourth season.

The pilot episode of The Winchesters launched on The CW on Oct. 11, 2022, while the season finale aired on Mar. 7, 2023. Serving as a prequel and spinoff to Supernatural (which comparatively lasted for 15 seasons), The Winchesters is narrated by Jensen Ackles and stars Meg Donnelly as Mary Campbell, Drake Rodger as John Winchester, Nida Khurshid as Latika Desai and Carlos Cervantez as Jojo Fleites.

The Winchesters Showrunner Has Already Addressed a Cancelation Contingency Plan

In Mar. 2023, showrunner Robbie Thompson spoke about what might happen to The Winchesters if The CW opted not to pick it up for a second season. "I've spoken a lot with our partners at Warner Bros. because, obviously, we're not sure what's happening," he said. "We've talked about places...that we may have to look to down the road [if the show is not renewed and needs a new home]. But the short-term answer is I don’t actually know and probably won’t for a little while. I can only say that, as uncertain as these times have been, our partners at The CW and Warner [Bros.], in particular, have just been really awesome to work with."

Kung Fu, meanwhile, first aired in April 2021 and is ending after its third season, which also concluded in Mar. 2023. The series (which is a remaining of the 1972 television series of the same name) follows a Chinese-American woman named Nicky Shen (Olivia Liang) as she drops out of college, goes to China and dedicates her life to martial arts. Along with Liang, Kung Fu stars Kheng Hua Tan, Eddie Liu, Shannon Dang and more.
