Jensen Ackles will reprise his role from Supernatural for the upcoming prequel The Winchesters, but the stars of the series say that his contributions to The CW show ranged far beyond playing Dean.
Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly, who will respectively portray John Winchester and Mary Campbell, addressed Ackles' extensive involvement in an interview with TVLine. "He was on set every single day of the pilot, just like being super collaborative, giving us notes, telling us about the universe that we might not know about," said Donnelly. "So it was really good insight."
Ackles rose to fame playing Dean Winchester over all 15 seasons of the urban fantasy Supernatural, alongside Jared Padalecki as his brother Sam. The two faced a variety of arcane threats and subplots, but a major theme of the series was the history of their monster-hunting family. The Winchesters promises to answer some of the remaining mysteries, beginning with how Dean and Sam's parents met.
As the resident expert on the world of Supernatural, Ackles is an executive producer on the series along with his wife, Danneel, who is also a Supernatural alum. When The Winchesters was announced, Ackles said, "When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story. I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents' relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey."
Details about the prequel have been scarce until recently. A full trailer for The Winchesters was revealed in May along with a poster featuring John and Mary, and the time slot for the show was confirmed to be Tuesdays at 8 p.m.
Currently, Ackles can be seen on Season 3 of The Boys, where he may be joined in the future by Jeffrey Dean Morgan -- the original John Winchester in Supernatural. Eric Kripke, who serves as showrunner on The Boys and created Supernatural, is also interested in bringing Padalecki into the Prime Video series if possible, giving fans reason to hope for the ultimate Winchester reunion.
The Winchesters stars Meg Donnelly as Mary Campbell and Drake Rodger as John Winchester. The series will premiere on The CW this fall.
