Rafe Judkins, the showrunner for Prime Video's The Wheel of Time, offered a glimpse at where Matrim Cauthon will head for Season 2 after leaving the main group behind.

"He's headed into, you can see it probably more clearly in the finished cut, but he's headed back to the White Tower and Tar Valon," Judkins revealed in an exclusive interview with CBR. The showrunner also addressed rumors the character was headed back to Shadar Logoth, the cursed city where the knife that infected Mat with darkness originated and teased that the new season will "pick up the story for him that he has in Book 3."

Mat's return to the White Tower in the novels is to completely remove the taint of the cursed dagger. Since Moiraine has used the One Power to help cleanse Mat in the series, it remains to be seen if he truly is free of its influence. Leaving the rest of the group behind when they enter the Ways does seem to indicate that Mat still has some lingering effects from his connection to the blade and Judkins' teaser is another indication the character isn't done with it.

There is also the fact that Barney Harris, the actor who portrayed Mat for all of Season 1, is being replaced by Dónal Finn (The Witcher) going forward, making him the only one of the Two Rivers five to be recast. There is currently no explanation as to why the choice was made but, in the novels, Mat undergoes several significant changes to his demeanor and appearance as the stories go on. The show has already had him become more withdrawn and mistrustful as he carried the dagger, but he's yet to pick up some of the more positive attributes that are defining traits.

The Wheel of Time has been a big hit for Prime Video, drawing huge streaming numbers in Nielsen's Original TV Series list during its premiere week. Internally, Amazon has found that the show also has strong staying power, with new viewers picking up the show each week. This is all after the series was picked up for a second season back in May before it even premiered.

Based on the epic novel series created by Robert Jordan, the entire first season of The Wheel of Time is streaming now on Prime Video. A premiere date for Season 2 has yet to be announced.
