Netflix has ordered a second season of the true-crime thriller series, The Watcher.

Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, The Watcher has officially been greenlit for a second season by Netflix. News of a second season for The Watcher came alongside an announcement that Netflix had ordered two new installments to Murphy and Brennan's Monster franchise following the success of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

"The creative team of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan on Monster along with [producer] Eric Newman on The Watcher are masterful storytellers who captivated audiences all over the world," said Netflix's Head of Global TV Bela Bajaria in a statement. "The back-to-back force of these two series is due to Ryan’s distinct original voice which created cultural sensations and we are thrilled to continue telling stories in the Monster and Watcher universes."

The Watcher Returns For a Second Season

While the focus of the next two installments of Monster has not been revealed by Netflix or Murphy, the streamer confirmed that the next anthologies will "tell the stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society." Starring Evan Peters as the titular serial killer, Dahmer has been steeped in controversy since its release on Netflix. While the show received backlash after Netflix placed it under the "LGBTQ" label, which was removed shortly after, others also argued that Dahmer disrespected the families of the titular serial killer's real-life victims.

The Watcher heavily dramatizes the true story of the Broaddus family who is harassed by a stalker known as The Watcher shortly after moving into their dream home, 657 Boulevard in New Jersey. Season 1's star-studded cast included Naomi Watts, Bobby Cavendale, Mia Farrow and Emmy-award winner Jennifer Coolidge, among others. Details on the cast and plotlines for the second season have not been revealed by Netflix or by the showrunners.

Following its release, the true-crime thriller overtook Dahmer as Netflix's most-watched show on the streaming service. Dahmer racked up over 701 million hours of viewing time since its debut in September, becoming Netflix's second-biggest English-language series of all time, coming in right behind Season 4 of Stranger Things.

Comprised of seven hour-long episodes, The Watcher is based on an article by Reeves Wiedeman titled, "The Haunting of a Dream House," based on a screenplay by Brennan. The series was directed by Paris Barclay, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. Season 1 of The Watcher is now available to stream in full on Netflix, as is the entirety of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
