The Walking Dead will officially be slaying zombies into 2021. Executive producer and current showrunner Angela Kang officially announced the hit show will be returning for an eleventh season during a panel at New York Comic Con.

"I'm happy to say to this crowd at New York Comic Con," she declared, "there will be a Season 11." In the meantime, the series returns for a tenth season on Oct. 6. Viewers were shown the first five minutes of the premiere, which was not light on the walkers or trademark brutality in the show.

Kang continues her tenure as showrunner from the ninth season. She succeeds Scott M. Gimple, who moved into the role as Chief Content Officer for all Walking Dead TV products, including the show proper, Fear the Walking Dead, and a yet-to-be-named third series.

Kang also mentioned her excitement for the upcoming tenth season, which highlights the fringe group The Whisperers who were first seen last season. "This is a storyline I absolutely love from the comic," she said. "It’s such a strange and interesting set of villains that have their very particular philosophy."

Above all, she was grateful for the fans of the series that have kept it a success for a decade. "Going into 10 seasons is amazing in and of itself," she said. "We couldn’t have done it without our fans who have been incredible. We’re trying to do new things and push it in new directions." Those new directions evidently seem to be taking them into season eleven and hopefully beyond.

AMC's The Walking Dead stars Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Nadia Hilker, Dan Fogler, Angel Theory, Lauren Ridloff and Eleanor Matsuura. The series returns for Season 10 on Oct. 6.
