As plans to expand the world of The Walking Dead continue, chief content officer Scott Gimple has confirmed a project about one of its greatest villains is in development at AMC Networks.

"We're working on something with one of the great Walking Dead villains of all time, and it's coming together," Gimple said during The Walking Dead's first-ever holiday special. The special is streaming exclusively on AMC+ and is hosted by Chris Hardwick, host of AMC's companion talk show Talking Dead. Gimple's remarks stopped short of revealing which villain the project will center on, but the show's decade-long run has provided numerous memorable antagonists for such a project.

David Morrissey, who played the Governor, has expressed interest in returning to the fictional universe of The Walking Dead and reprising his role of the notorious Woodbury leader. He has pointed to a series of novels by Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga that chronicle the villain's backstory as potential source material for any project involving the character.

Ryan Hurst, who portrayed Whisperer villain Beta, has previously teased his character's backstory could be the focus of an episode of Tales of the Walking Dead, an episodic anthology series in the works at AMC. An episode in the flagship series' 10th season highlighting Negan -- the villain known for wielding a bat wrapped in barb wire which he named Lucille (after his dead wife) -- and his backstory has already finished production and is set to air in 2021.
