A piece of John Winchester just returned to "Supernatural" -- sort of. In "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell," the show's latest episode, "Supernatural" referenced Jeffrey Dean Morgan with the casual appearance of a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire.

Let's back up a little. Over ten years ago, Morgan appeared as Sam and Dean's father John in the first two seasons of "Supernatural." However, following the character's death in Season 2, Morgan has not returned to the show. Nevertheless, John has a constant presence in his sons' lives and is often referenced by the Winchester brothers.

Since then, Morgan has gone on to take other memorable roles, from Denny in "Grey's Anatomy" to the Comedian in "Watchmen" to Jason Crouse in "The Good Wife." Most recently, though, he's found himself on AMC's "The Walking Dead," where he plays Rick's bat-wielding nemesis Negan.

As one eagle-eyed Twitter user pointed out,

I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY HAD LUCILLE IN AN EPISODE.#Supernatural @JDMorgan Are you missing something? pic.twitter.com/Ufmnt1UmKH

For his grand entrance on "The Walking Dead," Morgan's Negan used his barbwire-endowed baseball bat -- which the character affectionately nicknamed Lucille -- to kill fan-favorite character Glenn Rhee. Lucille is Negan's signature weapon; "The Walking Dead" fans often associate it with the character. As such, "Supernatural's" inclusion is a subtle nod Morgan, who has left an incredible mark on the show even ten seasons later.

Late last year, "Supernatural" star Jensen Ackles had a Lucille-centric exchange with Morgan on Twitter, which means the "Supernatural" team was acutely aware of Morgan's deadly new role.

Hey @JDMorgan I found this in the trunk...can I try it out?. Don't miss tonight's episode. It's a knockout! #Supernatural #walkingdead pic.twitter.com/N0VooufX5u

There's no indication Morgan will return to "Supernatural" anytime soon, even as the show continues to pay homage to his character.

Starring Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins, "Supernatural" airs Thursdays at 8 pm EST on The CW. Airing Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC, “The Walking Dead” stars Andrew Lincoln, , Norman Reedus, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan, and Danai Gurira.
