WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 9 episode "Evolution," which premiered Sunday on AMC.

Following the departure of series lead Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes on AMC's fan-favorite television series The Walking Dead, the zombie-infested drama surprised all of its viewers by featuring a six-year time jump at the close of its Nov. 4 episode, "What Comes After." This allowed the series to have a new beginning, with characters like Daryl, Michonne and Judith Grimes now quite different from who they were when we had last seen them.

Obviously, such a time jump means that fans have a lot of questions about what happened during those six years. And while The Walking Dead has never really been one to focus on flashbacks, series showrunner Angela Kang assures that we will find out some of what happened during those six years.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kang revealed that the series will feature flashbacks to those missing years when the series returns next year. "We’ll definitely be telling the story of what happened there, and what’s kind of exciting about a six-year jump is that there is the opportunity to go back and tell some of those stories, the showrunner said. "So we’ll see some of what has happened."

Kang continued by explaining that these flashbacks will not just fill in the gaps, but offer important character moments that inform who these characters now are, six years in the future. "It’s a deep, emotional story for Michonne, and for Daryl too," she said. "So I’m excited for people to experience that. It’s something that certainly has had an effect on Michonne in a deep and particular way. So that’s something that we wanna tell people what that’s about at some point."

The Walking Dead's mid-season finale, "Evolution," featured not only the death of a major character, but the official arrival of the series' next human threat, The Whisperers. Therefore, when the series returns from its hiatus, there will be plenty of stories to tell, both in the present and in the past.
