The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus revealed that the upcoming Daryl Dixon spinoff will have a far different tone compared to its predecessor.

During an appearance on Talking Dead, Reedus revealed that while filming for the spinoff has yet to begin, all the pieces are finally coming together as the sets have been prepared and the actors have begun their training. "We haven't started yet, but it's getting real right now," the actor explained. "All the prep's happening, [The Walking Dead director, executive producer, and special FX make-up designer Greg Nicotero is] out there whipping everybody into shape right now. The sets are crazy. There are castles! It's a whole other level."

With the spinoff series taking place in France, Reedus teased that fans will be treated to an all-new experience unique to The Walking Dead. "The cinematography's gonna be insane, the tone, the feel, the sound is going to be different," he said. "It's going to be a different vibe."

Daryl Dixon Heads to France

Executive producer Scott M. Gimple was the one to confirm that the Daryl Dixon spinoff will take place in France during Talking Dead's "The Walking Dead Universe Preview" special. "Daryl is a fish out of water to start with. If Daryl finds himself with new people, he's a fish out of water. In France, in a country that's going through the apocalypse, [it's] an entirely different thing," Gimple said at the time. "He finds himself having to reinvent himself again, having to find himself again, and also, not being with — probably — the only people in the world he's comfortable with."

According to AMC president Dan McDermott, the spinoff will "follow Daryl as he wakes up and finds himself somewhere on the European continent and tries to piece together what happened," highlighting that there will be mysteries surrounding not only how the crossbow-wielding zombie apocalypse survivor will return home, but how he got to France in the first place.

Audiences have already had their first taste of the upcoming AMC show as the limited series The Walking Dead: World Beyond featured a mid-credits scene that depicted an abandoned French laboratory referenced by Dr. Edwin Jenner (Noah Emmerich) in Season 1 of The Walking Dead. Gimple confirmed that the sequence is a reference to the Daryl Dixon spinoff.

The Daryl Dixon spinoff is set to air sometime in 2023. The Walking Dead is available to stream on AMC+, with the third part of its eleventh and final season currently airing.
