The announcement of a new Voltron television series seemed to indicate that the feature film version of the beloved franchise was dead — but the Defender of the Universe's big screen ambitions remain alive and well, according to the movie's producers.
"We've been working over the last several months meeting with various screenwriters, and we're actually on the cusp of securing an A-level screenwriter who's going to write the Voltron movie," producer Richard Suckle told MTV Splash Page. "That's all part of the plan here: reintroducing the brand to the fans who've watched over the last 25 years and to a new generation. We are very close to securing a screenwriter who's going to actually write the feature version — so that's always been part of the plan."
Not only are producers close to hiring a screenwriter, several directors have reportedly expressed interest. All in all, a Voltron film could arrive in theaters as early as 2013.
"You never can tell, but I think that if we're lucky going into 2011, and in a perfect world, if we could have a Voltron movie sometime in the summer of 2013, that would be what I would consider a very likely timeline," said Suckle.
