After seventeen years, The Venture Bros. was recently canceled by Adult Swim. With the abrupt ending of the series, many of the show's lingering mysteries and plotlines have been left unresolved.

What makes the cancellation of the series particularly tragic is that the series was canceled amidst production of Season 8, where the creators were likely planning to address many of these plotlines. There are countless mysteries in the world of The Venture Bros., but here are several major ones that have been left unresolved by the premature cancellation of the series.

Scare Bear

Scare Bear first appeared in the fourth season auditioning for membership in Phantom Limb's Revenge Society, but he was rejected due to his frightening appearance. He later returned in Season 7, saving an injured Hank Venture from a snowstorm. The bear led him towards his brother Dean's dorm room where Hank witnessed his girlfriend Serena cheating on him with his brother before falling into a coma.

The character then made his reappearance in the same episode where Grover Cleveland's Presidential Time Machine was reintroduced, and a lot of fans have speculated that it could be an alternate version of Hank or Dean under the costume. While an interesting theory, it's one that may never come to fruition.

Movie Night Massacre at Gargantua-1

Venture-Bros-Jonas-Blue-Morpho

Red Death explained that Vendata and a crew of supervillains concocted an unsanctioned Guild plot to hijack the Gargantua-1 space station. The amnesiac cyborg confronted Jonas and tried to coerce him by threatening him with an illicit tape. When that failed, Vendata threatened to open the cargo bay doors, and what happened next resulted in everyone, including the infiltrators, being jettisoned out into space.

Neither Blue Morpho nor Red Death claims responsibility for the massacre. Bud Manstrong was a paperboy during Movie night and he was one of the few lucky survivors. In Season 1, he told a ghost story about a "Phantom Spaceman," a disgruntled crew member who suddenly cracked opening the pod bay doors. It was likely Manstrong, who caused the incident after presumably encountering a disguised Red Death, but fans will never know for sure.

Dr. Mrs. Monarch's Decision

Dr-Mrs-Monarch

During the episode "The Terminus Mandate," members of the new Guild council were required to retire from active villainy in order to remain on the council. The bad guys were given one last opportunity to be villains before retiring for good, and while many of them chose to retire, Dr. Mrs. Monarch's decision was never shown. In later episodes, she is seen still working in the Guild council, so presumably, she chose to retire. The impact of Sheila's council job, as well as the revelation that Rusty Venture is Malcolm's half brother, could have seriously strained her relationship with the Monarch, but sadly that fallout will go unexplored.

Peril Partnership vs Guild of Calamitous Intent

Throughout the seventh season, there has been a running plotline between the Peril Partnership and the Guild of Calamitous Intent. The Peril Partnership placed Guild Stranger S-464 as a mole within the organization. S-464 is found out and he's convinced to become a double agent by Dr. Mrs. Monarch if she can repair his relationship with O.S.I. agent Kimberly McManus.

While this is happening, Wide Whale has stopped paying kickbacks to the Partnership in order to keep out of Guild territory. The Guild Council agrees to continue the payments, but an enraged Red Death murders Blind Rage thus ending the peace. In the end, the Guild and Peril Partnership were definitely inching closer to an all-out war in Season 8.

Grover Cleveland's Presidential Time Machine

The Venture Bros. has a tendency to bring back seemingly innocuous things many seasons later. In the episode "The Forecast Manufacturer," a time-traveling Rusty and Billy exit Grover Cleveland's Presidential Time Machine and encounter the Monarch and Henchman 21 on The Creep's island. Rusty is missing a finger and calls the Monarch by his real name before returning to the time machine to further fix the timeline. From this brief scene, Season 8 was hinting at a huge time travel storyline that will sadly go unanswered.

Secret Venture Siblings

Thematically, The Venture Bros. is a series about multiple generations of Venture siblings dealing with the fallout of parental issues and their father's legacy. The Season 7 episode "The Saphrax Protocol," confirmed the long-held theory that the Monarch was related to Rusty. However, Malcolm isn't the only secret Venture sibling out there, as Dr. Quymn, Billy Quizboy, and possibly Rocket Impossible, could all be candidates, too. Fans have fiercely debated this topic for years, and this might have been a revelation down the line.

What Happened to Jonas Venture Sr.'s Head?

At the end of the episode "Arrears in Science," Brock Sampson states that the O.S.I. has taken Jonas' head for further research. Later after the events of "The Forecast Manufacturer," S-464 was mind-wiped by the Guild and exchanged for a prisoner named Black Strap to the O.S.I. Now that S-464 is in their custody, they could be planning on transplanting Jonas' head into the Guild stranger. And don't forget, Jonas was going to temporarily take over Blue Morpho's body until he got the clone project up and running again. Unfortunately, it's possible a shocking revelation like this could have occurred in Season 8.

Who is Hank and Dean's Mother?

After seven seasons, the name of the boy's mother was finally revealed. Bobbi Saint Simone was apparently the mother of Hank and Dean, and she left after Rusty became obsessive and began emotionally smothering her. A potential Season 8 storyline might have focused on Hank's journey to find his real mom, but the premature cancellation of the series has ended these plans.

Created by Jackson Publick and written by Publick and Doc Hammer, The Venture Bros. is currently available to stream on Hulu.
