The Umbrella Academy was one of the most popular shows on Netflix last year. Ever since Season 1 was released in February 2019, fans have been eagerly waiting to find out what happens next. Fortunately, the show was confirmed for a second season in April 2019.

Here's what we know so far about The Umbrella Academy Season 2.

TRAILER

The trailer for season 2 was released on July 8. It reveals that not only did the siblings go back in time, the apocalypse did too. Now instead of ending in 2019, the world will now end on November 25, 1963. It’s no coincidence that this is only a few days after the assassination of President Kennedy, an event which played an important role in the source material. In Season 1, Number Five was present at the assassination when he broke his contract and jumped back to his family in 2019. It remains unclear how this event is linked to the apocalypse but it looks like Five and his siblings will be returning to this moment.

As expected, the Commission will be returning but with a different cast of characters. It appears that the Swedish assassins who will be coming after the Umbrella Academy are working for the Commission. They are joined by a new addition from the comics, Carmichael the talking goldfish, and a familiar, though much older, face in Hazel. On the other side, the Umbrella Academy will be teaming up with their deceased father, Reginald Hargreeves.

THE STORY

The Umbrella Academy Season 1 ended on a huge cliffhanger. Vanya Hargreeves became the White Violin, and the Academy came together to take her down. While they managed to stop Vanya without killing her, they still failed to prevent the oncoming apocalypse. Number Five used his time travel powers to whisk himself and his siblings, including the unconscious Vanya, safely away -- although it's unclear where or when they ended up.

On February 19, The Umbrella Academy's official twitter account released posters for Season 2 that teased, "When are they?" On June 16, they also released some stills from Season 2. It looks like the siblings have landed in the 1960s and quite a bit of time has passed since some of them are sporting longer hair. On July 8, the trailer was released. It confirmed that Season 2 will see the siblings coming together again to try and prevent another apocalypse.

The Umbrella Academy is based on the Dark Horse comic-book series of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. Season 1 loosely follows the first comic arc, "Apocalypse Suite," with some elements of the second arc, "Dallas." Certain events in the television adaptation differ greatly from the source material but we can still expect Season 2 to follow the "Dallas" arc. It could even incorporate some elements from the third arc, "Hotel Oblivion."

In "Dallas," the Academy travels back to the 1960s with the aid of Number Five's former employer, the Temps Aeternalis. A couple of our heroes work with the organization to ensure that the assassination of President John F. Kennedy happens while the other Academy members work to prevent it. While time travel will be a big part of Season 2, it’s unclear if it will still incorporate the JFK assassination.

In addition, "Hotel Oblivion" reveals more about the Hargreeves' adopted father, Reginald Hargreeves, including that he created an off-world prison to house all of the Academy's defeated adversaries. The arc culminates in a jail break that sees the villains return to wreak havoc on Earth. Parts of this story could be incorporated into Season 2, especially as a means to set up a potential Season 3.

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS

The official synopsis is as follows:

Five warned his family (so, so many times) that using his powers to escape from Vanya’s 2019 apocalypse was risky. Well, he was right - the time jump scatters the siblings in time in and around Dallas, Texas. Over a three year period. Starting in 1960. Some, having been stuck in the past for years, have built lives and moved on, certain they’re the only ones who survived. Five is the last to land, smack dab in the middle of a nuclear doomsday, which - spoiler alert! - turns out is a result of the group’s disruption of the timeline (déjà vu, anyone?). Now the Umbrella Academy must find a way to reunite, figure out what caused doomsday, put a stop to it, and return to the present timeline to stop that other apocalypse. All while being hunted by a trio of ruthless Swedish assassins. But seriously, no pressure or anything.

As predicted, this confirms that Season 2 will draw from the "Dallas" arc of the comics, but with the added threat of another apocalypse. This could also explain the order of the posters released on Twitter on May 28. Many fans speculated that the siblings would be separated and would pop up again in the order of the posters. As the synopsis confirms, Five was the last to land as well as the last poster to be released.

RELEASE DATE

The Umbrella Academy Season 2 will be released on July 31. Production was halted on many TV shows and movies due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, but luckily, this didn't affect The Umbrella Academy. Filming for Season 2 wrapped in November, and the project was in post-production when the pandemic began. As a result, we won't have to wait too much longer for new episodes.

CAST AND CREW

Steve Blackman continues as showrunner for The Umbrella Academy Season 2. All of the Hargreeves siblings will be returning as well, with Tom Hopper as Luther, David Castañeda as Diego, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison, Robert Sheehan as Klaus, Aidan Gallagher as Number Five, Justin Min as Ben and Ellen Page as Vanya. They will also be joined by Cameron Britton’s Hazel and Colm Feore’s Sir Reginald Hargreeves. As for the rest of the Season 1 cast, no other returns have been confirmed, but between the show's time travel and Klaus' ability to summon the dead, it's still possible they'll be seen again.

The Academy will also be joined by three newcomers: Ritu Arya (Humans), Yusuf Gatewood (Good Omens) and Marin Ireland (Y: The Last Man). Arya will play a character named Lila who's described as "a chameleon who can be as brilliant or as clinically insane as the situation requires," Gatewood will play Raymond, a "born leader" and "devoted husband," while Ireland will play Sissy, a "fearless, no-nonsense Texas mom."

Based on the Dark Horse Comics series created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy stars Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher and Justin Min. Season 1 of The Umbrella Academy is currently available on Netflix and Season 2 will be released on July 31.
