WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy Season 2, streaming now on Netflix.

When Netflix's live-action version of The Umbrella Academy comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá premiered, it seemed like a clear adaptation of the first volume of the series, Apocalypse Suite. Sure, some changes were made, but the main premise and the big story beats were all the same -- save for the ending of the season, which saw the Hargreeves siblings fail to stop the apocalypse, unlike the comic.

Season 2 was a bigger departure from the comic, but it was still largely inspired by the series' second volume, Dallas. However, when this second season came to an end, it became clear that Season 3 will not follow the comic books.

The Umbrella Academy: Dallas saw the Hargreeves siblings travel back in time to 1963 to ensure that John F. Kennedy would be assassinated, lest the timeline be altered and a nuclear apocalypse destroy the Earth. The second season of the Netflix adaptation used these broad strokes, but it made great changes to the overall story by having the members of the Umbrella Academy arrive at different times in the '60s, giving some of them the time to start new lives. The focus on JFK's assassination was also lessened, as the Hargreeves focused more on preserving the timeline and getting back home to 2019, where they belong.

Dallas ended with the children returning home, ready to start a new chapter in their lives. Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy, on the other hand, changed things up in a big way, as the Hargreeves returned to an alternate version of 2019 that had been changed by their actions in the past. Here, they returned home to discover that the Umbrella Academy didn't exist -- instead, it was named the Sparrow Academy, and it was lead by their own Number One, Ben, who was still very much alive in this reality. Not only is this ending different than the source material, but it also sets up a third season that doesn't seem to be inspired in the slightest by The Umbrella Academy comic's third volume, Hotel Oblivion.

Hotel Oblivion focused primarily on the title hotel, which was a prison constructed by Reginald Hargreeves in a pocket dimension to lock up all of the supervillains the Umbrella Academy had defeated over the years. Eventually, there was a mass breakout, and all of the villains returned to Earth to attack. The Umbrella Academy then had to defeat them all, and the volume ended with the surprise arrival of another superhero team, the Sparrows.

The Sparrows are clearly meant to be the inspiration behind Season 2's Sparrow Academy. However, the Hargreeves don't find them in an alternate reality, and Ben isn't their leader. Therefore, it looks like Season 3 will all but skip the events of Hotel Oblivion to instead focus on the cliffhanger ending of the comic series. What's more, Hotel Oblivion is currently the last entry in The Umbrella Academy comic series. Therefore, Season 3 doesn't have to follow any specific storyline from the comics going forward, and the series can do its own thing -- even more than it already was.

Streaming now on Netflix, The Umbrella Academy Season 2 stars Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher and Justin H. Min, with Ritu Arya, Yusuf Gatewood, Marin Ireland, Jordan Claire Robbins, Kate Walsh and Colm Feore.
