"Hello, my name is Sean and I'm an inkoholic," laughs Parsons. "I officially left the world of forty hour work week's, steady paycheck's and paid vacations for the glitz, glamour and bubbling gastric juices that accompany comics back in the spring of 1994. Besides working on 'Fear Agent,' I've also had a 'Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' book come out back in April as well as issues 26 and 27 of 'The Outsiders'recently for DC along with various pick-up jobs filling in on pages for Marvel. And a couple covers over Chris Bachalo at TopCow.*cough-fear agent-cough* I have another Tales of the TMNT book with Scott Cohn to start soon as well as a book*cough-fear agent-cough* I worked on called 'Son Of Vulcan' at DC. But the main focus is on 'Fear Agent.'"
The focus is so heavily on "Fear Agent" for Parsons because he loves the project and says his involvement with the project came out of knowing writer Rick Remender. "Rick came to me after a pitch on another project we were working on went awry, and said he had a great sci-fi idea that would bring about my eternal salvation. I knew that up to that point Tony [Moore] had been bathing in a tub of kitten innards every full moon, and I figured if Rick could save Tony's soul, I would be a cinch. I had met Tony once, but had never met Rick before. Now I can't shake the image from my head."
Many fans might not realize that both Remender and Moore are accomplished inkers in their own right, something that could reasonably add pressure to Parsons, but he says it's a unique experience. "It's a real task keeping Rick happy, which is a good thing. Knowing he could easily do the job himself, and having him not allow some of the little things slide without calling me on them has pushed the quality level pretty far. With Tony it's a different story. He has spent his entire career inking himself. I am the first guy he has let ink him for more than a few pages that I know of, which is a lot to live up to. He has been great about giving me some freedom to do things my way which is very hard when your used to having total control over the look of your art."
When asked what attracted him to "Fear Agent," besides the concept and feel of the series, Parsons has a simple answer. "Rick and Tony. Both of these guys are great at what the do and a lot of fun to interact with. Add to that the sci-fi element, which I think we all really enjoyed as kids, and you have something fresh that the market hasn't seen in a long time.
"Rick has written a purely simple, fun story that really bites into the back fat of the early cold war era sci-fi flicks that bubbled with tough men and sexy lady's standing up against ridiculously silly space monsters to fulfill our god given right to claim their planets for our own. I hope we live to see a commie crushing super soldier story from Rick some day. THE COMMIE CRUSHER! (Rick, we need to talk).
"I think Rick really sold me with the idea that we would be working on something we loved and put our souls into. 'Fear Agent' isn't going to be just a comic. It's an investment of ourselves."
Parsons will be only be inking Moore's interior work and he's had a lot of contact with Moore thus far, saying the experience has been positive. "He has been great. Tony has a real nice looseness in his own inks that I feel can not be captured by another inker. He understands that, and he is really stepping back and allowing me to do what I think I need to do to the work to make it mine as well as his. Having his trust in me to bring a different look to his work that his loyal fans are unfamiliar with means a lot. I really hope they are as happy with it as Tony and I are."
While Parsons has been inspired at moments, he admits to refraining from offering too much feedback to Moore, as to not appear unprofessional. "I've had a few idea's that I threw into the pot as far as what could be fun or cool, but Tony is a great penciller and I can't justify telling him how to do his job."
Part of what makes Moore such a great artist is his detail and for an inker- who isn't simply a tracer- working with those pencils is proving beneficial for s. "Tony's pencils are helping me be a better inker. He draws considerably looser than most guys I ink at Marvel and DC. I finally get a chance to focus less on being slick and making pretty lines, and more on creating solid structures and texture. He gave me a lot of freedom to take his background elements and make them mine. I've really had a blast with the caves in issue #1. I haven't had a lot of free time to pick up a pencil over the last ten years, but this entire job has really made me want to get back to it. I hope by doing so it allows me to bring more mood to future issues."
