WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Third Day, now airing on HBO.

The Third Day's been quite a journey for Sam (Jude Law) as he got stuck on Osea Island, thinking he was seeing a mysterious ghost. It turns out Sam's been lured back home by the island's supernatural soul as it wants its "Father" back to guide the natives. Sam, though, is reluctant, just as his grandfather was when the old-timer fled Osea, as he doesn't subscribe to its Celtic-Christian rituals, blood sacrifices and paganism.

However, in a unique interlude episode, a 12-hour livestream event put on by theater company and series co-producers, Punchdrunk, Sam's fate is finally revealed.

Sam accepted his role at the end of the first three episodes when his grand-uncle killed himself to pass the baton on. The natives greeted him and sent him to the mansion that now belongs to him, where the ghost is revealed as his son, Nathan, whom the Martins kidnapped years ago. Sam's reunited with the kid and goes inside, still mentally reeling from almost losing his life trying to escape.

This event picks up with Sam, rugged and weary, preparing for a trial that involves a lot of Jesus-like events. He's given a crown of thorns, made to drag a boat and has a weird maritime supper with disciples, all before he's placed on a platform in the sea along with another man. They pass out from exhaustion and it seems they drown, evidenced by when other islanders bring their pale bodies back to shore and dump them in graves they themselves dug.

The natives then start the music festival they've curated for tourists, although it's unclear if they know of these dark sacrifices are to the war god, Esus. The fact there are scarecrows and effigies hanging from trees, scary relics all over and ominous statues should do the trick. However, with Jess -- the woman Sam had an affair with -- and a singer (played by Florence Welch) all guiding people into a day of worship, song and party, people get distracted.

However, things change drastically at night. People are being baptized in mud, engaging in drugs and sex, while Jess can be seen arguing with her husband on the phone. She betrayed Sam and brought him back to Osea at gunpoint, with the island holding her daughters hostage, but as she tells her husband he won't ever get to them, it's clear now Osea was offering her asylum. She throws herself on Sam's grave in gratitude, hinting she did love him. And as the one-camera, one-shot creative approach switches back to the festival, Sam and the man show up, muddied and panting.

They dug out their graves and have been reborn, worthy at last. Sam's anointed in a celebration that includes torches, fireworks and a lot of screaming, ready to make the land bountiful again. Admittedly, without dialogue, there are some key questions as it's unclear if Sam's possessed by Esus, if he's sane and has become a believer, if he cares about the wife and two daughters he left back home or if he'll choose Jess as his queen.

The other man who endured the trial with him is left a mystery, so many hope the remaining three episodes will address these issues. That said, this finale fits Sam's journey as he was looking to be made whole again and always believed in giving to others. It would appear Sam rising from the grave shows the selfless side of him, and whether it be Jess, the suicidal Epona or the other natives, it's clear now he was always meant to look after them.

Starring Jude Law, Naomie Harris, Katherine Waterston, Nico Parker, Charlotte Gairdner-Mihell, Paddy Considine and Emily Watson, The Third Day airs at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
