The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran succinctly sums up the philosophy of new team member Peacemaker, the dedicated but murderous vigilante who joins the band of outlaws on a not-officially-sanctioned mission for the government.

Safran said of Peacemaker, "He has this moral code that seems skewed by the amount of violence he inflicts. It's like f---ing for virginity - he's fighting for peace," Entertainment Weekly reported.

John Cena co-stars as Peacemaker in the follow-up to 2016's Suicide Squad. Returning are Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, the ruthless government official who dangles the possibility of shortened prison terms to the squad members; Joel Kinnaman as Col. Rick Flag, a Special Forces officer who is the field leader; Margot Robbie, in her third outing as Harley Quinn; and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang. Directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad is not presented as a sequel to the earlier film, but a new approach to the story and characters drawn from the 1987 DC comics series.

Peacemaker originated with Charlton Comics and was one of several of that company's characters that DC acquired, joining the DC Universe in 1988. Cena is slated to reprise the role in an eight-episode spinoff TV series for HBO Max in January 2022.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Mayling NG as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Solsoria, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, John Cena as Peacemaker and Steve Agee, Taika Waititi and Storm Reid.
