The Suicide Squad writer/director James Gunn's love for his characters extends even to a big bad, as he shows in a behind-the-scenes photo with a handheld version of Starro the Conquerer.

Gunn cuddles up to a Starro prop with a contented grin on his face in a Twitter post, while the alien starfish's single eye stares into the distance. It's a highly detailed piece with lifelike textures and colors, as Gunn cradles it to his face with care. Starro doesn't even seem interested in attaching to Gunn's face. "Friends are forever. #thesuicidesquad" the caption reads.

Starro was the enormous extraterrestrial being held captive in the Jotunheim facility on the island of Corto Maltese, that the Suicide Squad was sent to destroy in Gunn's film released earlier this year. While the massive alien entity was anything but cuddly after a long imprisonment and its subsequent destructive rampage, the director's affection for his villain shines through in the photo.

Gunn has moved on to begin work on the third installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise for Disney/Marvel, but that doesn't mean he's done with the DC Extended Universe. There is the Peacemaker HBO Max series starring John Cena set to premier in 2022. Gunn hinted at his development of another yet-to-be-named project for DC, and continues to reveal facts and release other photos and videos related to the making of The Suicide Squad via social media.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad is streaming on digital platforms and has a release date of Oct. 26 for home media.
