James Gunn teased that his upcoming DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film, The Suicide Squad, is equal parts sad and complicated.

"It's a sad story," Gunn told Screen Rant during a set visit attended by several outlets. "And one of the most fun things is I think at the end of the day, even though we do kill Guardians of the Galaxy, we kill some of them, but in this movie, it really is about, you don't know who's going to get killed."

Gunn further explained that, in his Guardians of the Galaxy films, "you start out sort of knowing these are guys that may have different problems, but at the end of the day, they're all really good people." The director noted, however, that's not necessarily the case with the members of his Suicide Squad.

"That isn't the case with this, it's a much more complicated story," Gunn shared. "Some of these characters may end up being good. Some of them are definitely not good. And some of them, most of them are somewhere in between with different shades of gray and that moral drama, that moral play. The fact that you don't know anything that's going to happen."

Gunn's comments about the duality among the Suicide Squad members came just days after the director also took it upon himself to correct a spelling error on merchandise related to Ratcatcher 2, who is portrayed in The Suicide Squad by Daniela Melchior.

The somewhat awkward exchange occurred on Twitter after a fan posted a picture of a trading card included in a box of Splat hair dye and questioned if "Clio Cazo" was the character’s real name. Gunn was quick to respond, correcting the spelling to "Cleo Cazo." Gunn was also dubbed "the fastest fact-checking director in the western hemisphere" after answering a handful of other fan-submitted questions in the replies, including Thinker's real name (Gaius Grieves) and Cazo's point of origin (Portugal).

In another Twitter thread on July 3, Gunn revealed which villains didn't make the cut in his film. Among the villains posted by the director were Livewire, Punch/Jewelee, Black Spider and Deathstroke. Gunn explained in a second post, "Every character in #TheSuicideSquad was chosen for a purpose, great or small, and although I love many of these other characters, they didn't serve the story quite as well."

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Mayling NG as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Solsoria, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and John Cena as Peacemaker, with Steve Agee, Taika Waititi and Storm Reid.
