The Suicide Squad star Jai Courtney mirrored the now-infamous words of Suicide Squad writer/director David Ayer during a recent press junket.

When asked which Marvel character he'd like to see join Task Force X, Courtney said "Fuck Marvel" with a huge smile across his face.

This, of course, was almost certainly a nod to Ayer's comments in 2016. During the Suicide Squad premiere in 2016, Ayer shouted "Fuck Marvel!" in front of a massive crowd, many of whom were shouting the same exact thing. However, Ayer immediately apologized, tweeting, "Sorry about getting caught up in the moment and saying f*ck Marvel. Someone said it. I echoed. Not cool. Respect for my brother filmmakers." Two years later, he doubled down by expressing his appreciation for what Marvel Studios had accomplished at that point. "Marvel is killing it," he wrote. "Proud of their success. Life is a river. Ro with it brother. Peace."

Courtney appeared as Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang in Ayer's Suicide Squad and he reprises the role for James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, which has been described as more of a soft reboot than a sequel. He and the rest of Task Force X unite in theaters and on HBO Max Aug. 6.
