David Ayer's 2016 Suicide Squad film may not have been R-rated (and according to the director himself, it was never meant to be), but actor Joel Kinnaman has strongly suggested that director James Gunn's upcoming reboot, The Suicide Squad, will be -- "heavily" so, in fact.

"That movie is going to be insane," Kinnaman said of The Suicide Squad in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "The script is so funny. Every page of that script was funny, and every page made me laugh. James just has this command of that genre, but also over every aspect of comedy and even the marketing. He just understands the world so well, and since he wrote it, he really reinvents not just the concepts, but also the characters.

"For me, it was like I did my first comedy, but it's like heavily R-rated," he continued. "It was a real learning experience for me, too, because I'd never done a comedy in that way before. So I asked James to work with me and teach me this shit. And yeah, we had so much fun doing it. That movie is going to be a fucking monster. Honestly, even though I'm in it, I can't wait to see it as a fan."

Kinnaman stars in The Suicide Squad as Colonel Rick Flag, the military officer tasked with keeping Task Force X in line. Kinnaman first played Rick Flag in Ayer's Suicide Squad in 2016. He is one of the few actors from Ayer's film that will reprise his role in Gunn's upcoming reboot, joining Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) and Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang).

While an official MPAA rating for The Suicide Squad is likely a ways off, Kinnaman seems confident it will be rated R. Notably, while R-rated superhero movies are nothing new, their prevalence has certainly seen an uptick in recent years, between Fox's X-Men spinoffs like Deadpool and Logan, as well as DC's own movies like Joker and Birds of Prey.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian, as Polka-Dot Man, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Mayling NG as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Solsoria, Steve Agee as King Shark, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, John Cena as Peacemaker, Taika Waititi and Storm Reid. The film arrives in theaters Aug. 6, 2021.
