James Gunn is bringing out all the C-list villains for The Suicide Squad. Many of them will probably die before the end of the film, as is expected for a Suicide Squad film, but while the franchise often brings out low-tier villains to take on absurd tasks, many of the contestants this time around are especially obscure and ridiculous.

For many, a villain named Polka-Dot Man might be a little too goofy to stomach. However, despite his cartoonish appearance and absurd gimmick, this villain has a long-running history as a minor Batman adversary. Polka-Dot Man might sound ridiculous, but when you dig into his history, you learn about a sad, pathetic man who just wanted to best the Bat. With that said, let's look at Polka-Dot Man's crazy history before David Dastmalchian brings the character to life in The Suicide Squad.

WHO IS POLKA-DOT MAN?

Polka-Dot Man -- initially named Mister Polka-Dot -- first appeared in Detective Comics #300. The book celebrated its 300th issue by introducing Abner Krill, a man who believed himself clever enough to outsmart and outmaneuver the Caped Crusader himself. Presumably, he fought the Bat because he wanted to bolster his already huge ego, but his ultimate motivations for turning to crime are unknown.

He ended up catching Dick Grayson, but Batman ultimately outmaneuvered and captured him. From there, now going by Polka-Dot Man, Krill turned to crime out of desperation. He couldn't earn any money and depended on his robberies to survive, but it soon became apparent that he wasn't particularly good at crime. Harvey Bullock beat him up with his own bat, Robin tracked him down with a tiger and all the other supervillains picked on him. Eventually, Polka-Dot Man would meet a grizzly end as part of General Immortus's gang, when, while serving as Immortus and Professor Milo's lackey, a manhole fell on his head during a battle, crushing his skull.

HIS POWERS

While Krill was an absurd criminal, he wasn't a total lunatic with delusions of grandeur. His understanding of technology allowed him to turn the various polka dots on his costume into essentially containment units for various weapons and items. They'd remain ordinary dots on his costume, but when Krill removed the polka dots and tossed them around, they would enlarge, as controlled by mechanisms on his belt.

From there, the polka dots would transform into anything from a chainsaw, a glider, a solar flare, a flying machine, a black hole and even just big fists to punch people. The problem was, however, that the dots, being color-coordinated, essentially forecasted to his adversaries what weapon he was about to use before he threw it. Also, as became apparent over time, he really didn't know how to use these dots to outmaneuver the Caped Crusader, Nightwing or even the Gotham Police Department. Furthermore, while Polka-Dot Man had several means of escape and fighting, he had no discernable defenses, which led to his untimely end.

It's unclear how James Gunn will bring Polka-Dot Man to life in The Suicide Squad at this point, but fitting of his legacy, this laughing stock of villainy will likely show fans some fascinating polka dot weapons. If he values his life, however, Dastmalchian's iteration of the character will need to invest in a helmet.
