Actor Scott Eastwood, who appeared in David Ayer's 2016 Suicide Squad movie, revealed that his father, film legend Clint Eastwood, convinced him to turn down the 2021 follow-up directed by James Gunn.

In an interview with Insider, Eastwood explained that Warner Bros. offered him a three-picture contract, which included Gunn's The Suicide Squad, but he rejected the deal because "they didn't want to pay me any money for those next movies and... they didn't have another script for the other movie, so I didn't know what I was going to be signing myself up for."

Before opting out of The Suicide Squad, Eastwood turned to his Oscar-winning father for advice. Recalling their conversation, the actor explained, "I said, 'They don't want to pay me.' He said, 'If it feels like they really need you and if it's a good part, then do it. If not, then don't.' I didn't have the answer to those questions at that time. I wasn't going to have the answers, and they were pressuring me. So ultimately it didn't happen."

2016's Suicide Squad featured Eastwood as "GQ" Edwards, a Navy SEAL Lieutenant who worked directly underneath Joel Kinnaman's Colonel Rick Flag. Edwards ended up being a minor character with limited screen time, but Eastwood said he "got a lot more love" in the unreleased "Ayer Cut," the director's original version of the film that Warner Bros. drastically altered.

Despite serving as a semi-reboot, Gunn's The Suicide Squad saw the return of several actors from the 2016 version, including Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Kinnaman as Flag. Will Smith and Jared Leto, who played Deadshot and The Joker, respectively, were the two most high-profile stars not to return for the follow-up.

Unlike its hit predecessor, 2021’s The Suicide Squad underperformed at the box office, possibly due to the film being released on HBO Max the same day it hit theaters. However, the DC blockbuster spawned the hit HBO Max spinoff series Peacemaker, which focuses on the antihero played by John Cena in the film.

Gunn recently revealed that a second Suicide Squad spinoff series is in development at HBO Max, but he wouldn't divulge many details about the project. "I can't say anything. It is connected to this universe, and I don't think it will be the same genre as Peacemaker; it won't be as much a comedy as Peacemaker, but it will be in the same universe," he shared.

Ayer's Suicide Squad and Gunn's The Suicide Squad are currently streaming on HBO Max.
